Printer with Scanner ...
« on: February 26, 2013, 12:10:02 AM »
Last time I purchased a printer was ... in 2001. Ever since then, I hated printers with passion. I know they're much better than a decade ago thou' right now I also need a really good scanner to scan images. I have 0 expertise in both fields. Ah, as for the printer. I want to be able to print glossy artwork and what type of ink and paper should I go for.

Please shower your knowledge on me ...

i can't comment on them, i just usually purchase those disposable $50-100 printers, they usually last no less than 6months before issues like printer-head getting clogged with ink and blabla pops out.

with this, i could at least skip the headache and purchase another one, toss the old one up to a friend's house and they're pretty much grateful for it.

edit: about the glossy print, its just which type of paper you use, using a gloss paper ends up with a glossy piece of art. the problem is that most inks hate gloss paper, they don't bond right.

are you going to scan plain paper? or glossy pictures?
is this for a hobby or work?
how important is quality?

I used to work with a professional photographer

He had a pair of Canon scanners (for film negatives and gral) that were REALLY REALLY good, those things could get us pictures of around 15000x15000 pixels to later fix up in photoshop. . . and I believe they were relatively cheap.

I MIGHT be biased, TBH working with him Canon really grew onto me, I've used Nikon d5000 and d3000 and the cheap Rebels and the expensive Mark II and Mark III and Canon just blew Nikon away in everything I could possibly think of. . .

anyways, pretty much most of his gear was Canon as well. He had a large printer that cost him like 3000 dlls IIRC (used) and even though he would try to use it as often as possible sometimes he couldnt print what he needed (too large), he told me out of Costco/Sams Club/printing places, costco had the best quality/price and thats where he got his large prints.

In other words TL;DR

get a canon scanner, even the office ones are very good for pictures/documents, I believe they go for 60ish

===========

If you want one of those dual things, then again I would recommend Canon, I just have a thing for them :P

Quality is pretty important. So Canon it is. I also recommend Canon at my work place for printers, scanners and cameras. Are there any specifications I need to look out for? Or if you can fill me in on that?

well for scanners I dont really know too much of the technical details, all I know is that I liked the results I got, I guess the most important thing to watch out for is the max image resolution, their dpi settings, color stuff

printers: the ones with more ink give better results but are exponentially more expensive to use (I mean can you believe this fucker of a printer wont print if one of the cartriges is empty. . .I mean I wanted a fucking b&w and "NO YELLOW NO PRINTING!" . . .RAGE!

when it comes to printing paper: the quality of the paper is the measure of how much ink it absorbs, for example grab a marker and put it in the newspaper (a single dot) and see how much it spreads out, photography paper has less absorption and the higher the quality the lower the absorption of the paper, so you get sharper images, some printers need special paper and TBH things can get messy that's why I recommend using printing services

i think you left out one detail about paper quality, its not that the less they absorb the better quality it is, its actually the opposite.

high quality paper is somewhere with both absorb and contain, meaning high quality papers should absorb a lot of ink (super absorbent) without the ink spreading (also known as splatter).
the most ideal quality paper is one that can absorb high amount of ink without it spreading, as in most cases the more ink it absorbs the more colorful and detailed the picture gets plus the less the ink spreads the more sharper it gets.
[ if you've done hand painting you should understand this ]

but obviously having both to a high degree is quite hard and nearly impossible, its a trade off, specially on the glossy papers. the trick to know which paper to get is to know how the paper was made, with relation to the grain, thickness and density of the paper.

The only good thing you can make out of printers is this.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Quality ink jet printers are expensive, they also clog easily if you don't use them regularly. Inks are very expensive.

For scanner even a cheap one like epson v33 is pretty good for most people. There's no reason to buy expensive scanner unless you want to digitize slides and negatives, i.e. transparent materials.
All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.

Good scanners mentioned.

The only good printers are laser ones, but obviously those are only worthwhile for lots of pages.
