Question on VPN's
« on: February 26, 2013, 06:46:53 AM »
So, the 6 strikes policy went into effect yesterday in the US. I'm paranoid and I wonder If I should look into getting a VPN connection. Anyone got suggestion on good VPN's? I looked at Hide My Ass and their 1 year deal seems like an nice option, same for bolehvpn. Also, is there any special thing I need to do to make sure my  registers my uploads on the private tracker, or does the tracker take care of itself in that regard?

No, what you should be looking into is a seedbox service. And quite a few providers also give a proxy service (which you shouldn't need).

But the thing is, if you haven't been receiving warnings from your ISP before this policy came into effect for downloading anime, do you even need to hide yourself on the internet?

Just ignore the damn policy. No Law will survives if everyone ignores them :)

As it has been proved repeatedly by the Russian legal system :).

Well, I thought about it overnight and I came to the same conclusion  :P....and no, I've never been warned by my ISP, possibly because I only ever seed/download 6 torrents at any one time (7 at the most) and I almost never reach my max upload speeds except for the occasional spike.

I did actually look into seedboxes, but they're fairly expensive per month and I am a broke American college student (a well off one, mind you because of my parents, but broke/not able to afford much on my own). TBH, I actually don't know how they're going to effectively apply the 6 strikes policy as it doesn't seem practical.

Personally, I prefer VPNs to seedboxes, because they provide security in all situations, not just torrent swarms. But if you have a really fast internet connection, getting one which can match it in speed would be expensive. If you have slower connections, they're a better option than seedboxes though, IMO.

Personally, I'd opt for the VPN, as it can be more useful for other situations, like Bob said.

Also, I'd rather have a slow and secure connection than a fast and unsecure one. Seedboxes seem a little overkill due to price... maybe in the future if I get more disposable income, but for now, I think a VPN would be a wise decision, even for more than just torrenting anime. Or anything in general.

As far as I can see, you can get a 400 GB seedbox for just over the price of a VPN, but it's your choice.

This has nothing to do with VPN service, instead I am questioning the law which led to the creation of this thread in the first place.

How will this law be enacted? Would any uploading of peer-to-peer content be considered a violation even if the material is not copyrighted? I am using Verizon FIOS which seems to be one of the top companies that have enacted this. The article here simply says if they find you in violation.

Huh, I thought they were pricier than that...

This is what I'm wondering as well, and I too have FIOS as my service provider...I guess we'll have to wait and see.

There was one guy who posted a few weeks ago asking why his seeding slowed to a crawl when he used his VPN and jumped right up to max when he disabled it.

Make sure you understand all the consequences and implications of using a service in a way that you really shouldn't. As has been mentioned already, a seedbox service is a far better choice for your money, if you want to pay for torrenting in the first place.

Keep in mind it's in pounds and not dollars, so multiply it by 1.5, but it's still not that expensive :]

I guess I am afraid of using one. I'm super paranoid that even if I DO get the attention of the feds, having a seedbox would really not be good for me. I don't know. :/
Then again, a VPN would be extremely useful for me in other cases (at least for now, since I frequently use public wi-fi) But some of you said that VPNs come with seedboxes, so I guess there's really zero downside to having one. I'd have really high upload speeds and download anonymity... but even a VPN which I considered buying is a bit too pricey for me right now. Believe it or not. :P

I may end up getting both a vpn and a seedbox eventually (read as when I get disposable income) at the moment though, I can afford only one or the other and I'm wondering which is more with my while....also, like Yui, seedbox's make me paranoid for some reason.

I know there is a seedbox service which allows payment by bitcoin for the overly paranoid, but I can't remember the name of it...
Edit: Apparently, there are quiet a few of them.

Yes I've heard of it too, but I really dont want to open the whole can-of-worms with bitcoins either =p It's not the payment that makes me paranoid, it's having my stuff off my machine that does it...oddly enough, I should have problems with any other cloud service like Dropbox (which kinda works on the same concept as I understand it) but I dont.

Maybe it's because, when it comes to seedboxes, I dont know which companies to "trust" and which to avoid. I'm not really sure how seedboxes work to begin with, and if I dont know/understand how something works, I'm generally get suspicious. Guess it's time I do more research, on seedboxes and VPN's...plus, I'm actually curious of how they work.

It's easy, the company has a server you rent which runs a torrent client (usually rtorrent), a web server and an ssh server. You use the web server to browse the online interface of the torrent client (usually rutorrent) and add torrents you want to download, and the ssh server to establish a secure connection you can use to download the files to your computer.

Some of these servers are shared (which means you don't have full control of it), while others are dedicated (which usually means you have root access).

Thanks so much for posting; answered the questions I've been having with the seedboxes.

Also thanks for putting up with a paranoid scrub such as myself :p

That makes two of us. I'm going to do a bit more research myself just to sate my personal curiosity but yea what you said helped.
