If You Had To Choose Just One...
« on: March 05, 2013, 02:50:00 AM »
I searched and I couldn't find an "all-time-favorite anime" thread so let's make one. (Actually, there is one but it's almost 4 years old.)

You only can post one, but please be sure to elaborate why this is your favorite anime of all time. I know it's hard, but try to keep it as concise as possible. Please avoid spoilers without using the spoiler tag.

If you are confused, then try to answer these questions:
1. What anime did you enjoy watching the most?
2. Why did you enjoy it so much?
3. Does it have high replay value?
4. Did you get immersed in the plot and connected to the characters?
*These are just ideas*

So basically, PICK ONE ANIME AND EXPLAIN WHY IT IS THE BEST.

I would have to pick Darker Than Black. The combination of fast-paced action, good character development, and a somewhat creative plot (at least to me) led to an intriguing story overall. Actually this is the one that got me into anime so it has a lot of sentimental value to me.

Kaleido Star

Japanese girl goes to America to audition for Kaleido Star (think Cirque Du Soleil), almost everything about Kaleido Star is shown (management, techs, marketing, practices, shows, competitions, rivalries, dorms). My favorite type of anime really. The character progression's beautifully done but most importantly : Sora's just awesome.

Revolutionary Girl Utena.

The character development, the lampooning of stereotypes, the art style, the plot, the music, and pretty much everything about it is fantastic. Kozue is my favorite character ever in any anime I've ever seen.

Just one, eh? Well, I could pick something off my top 5 but I don't think I'd actually choose one of those because it doesn't have the rewatch value of what I'm about to tell you...

Dragon Ball Z

I had it in my childhood and I can rewatch it a billion times and never get tired of it. While something like Claymore, Code Geass, Death Note or Mnemosyne might be great, I couldn't rewatch them so many times or just watch 20 episodes in a row without even the slightest hint of boredom or a headache or anything else.

I think few animes can compete really with the rewatchability of DBZ... Most of the modern shōnen are filled with massive filler arcs while DBZ if it actually had any fillers never felt like it did.

Id have to say Ghost in the Shell.

Before I had always liked anime and it interested me, but GiTS was the hook, line and, sinker.  The series had a nice balance between episodic and over arching plot, which is rarely done well.

Neon Genesis Evangelion.

It features everything that makes anime great: Interesting characters, a good plot, great character development, mystery, superb animation, mind fucking, mecha, brief nudity, psychological dysfunction, a nice blend of comedic moments, fine babes, and a hot headed and bodied tsundere. What more could I ask for? Maybe some solid romance... It is really a classic in my book.

Second would probably be either the GITS series or the first season of Clannad.

I'll go with a Ghibli film, Spirited Away.

It has many dichotomies. Traditional/ modern. Supernatural/ human. Fantasy/reality.

It is cute and charming, without being overly melodramatic, or sappy.

It shows us what happens when we do not take care of our planet. And why those old gods are not so bad to keep in mind when we do things today. And for me, it does so without being political. I do not think the difference between filthy and clean is not political.

It has a guy running the boilers! And I like how the old low technology works almost miraculously.

It makes me want to visit a place just like it, to have the same kind of good time that people used to have at one of those places.
Timing is everything in comedy!

Serial Experiments Lain

There's a drop of quality in the middle of the series but aside from episodes 5-8 the series is a pure 10.
Plus Boa in the intro, how awesome is that?

Because we can!

All Purpose Cultural Cat Girl Nuku Nuku

OVA, TV, even Dash!

Because! It's perfect in every way. And Nuku Nuku is adorable no matter how strangely they draw her... (Like in Dash! eh?)

Code Geass - One of my favorites, could watch again and again. It has some of the best qualities in an anime and continues to be great through the story line, character building, music, ending and much more.

Probably Samurai Champloo. The music, the style, the feel, it was very well done. It had the right amount of serious shit and not-so-serious shit. It also was pretty self deprecating which I like.

I'm gunna leave you anyway.
