Gah. I don't know if I can do it. My "favorite" tends to rotate between three or four different series, depending on my current mood.

So uh. Right now, it would be... Great Teacher Onizuka. The most epic non-action series ever created. I've watched it probably five or six times now. And if I was even 1/10th as awesome as Onizuka, I'd be, like... man of the year, every year. Greatest male character bar none.

Bakemonogatari Series.

It's both groundbreaking AND great to watch.

What? I already voted? I'm a CAT! I get 9 votes to match my 9 lives...

Also, it's really close between Nuku Nuku and Bake- the rest of the field is waaaay back in 3rd place (or lower).

7 more votes to come!  ::)

Bah...
Like I can answer >_<
I like so many series and rewatch multiple of them freguently.
those series are of different genres and all have their pros and cons.
It is impossible for me to pick just one, the best.
It would be a lot easier to pick my favourite by genre.
So, I'll just say:
A series with romance and drama like clannad that has scifi and mechs flying and fighting in space and heve politicos differences and problems like Gundam seed and the ppl would have variety of different powers like in index/raigun and they would have some problems like Evangelion
Then it would also need some gut twisting stuff like Higurashi and scumbags like Makoto who screw about every gal. Then it would need thrilling moments like Hajime no Ippo and adventurous spirit like One Piece and much much more. And all thus while the series would have a reeeeeeally good plot and character development and it wouldn't have plot holes and it would need amazing plot twist.
If a series were to have all that, and still work, it could be called the best.

Oh, PS. It would need really good laughs too.

Have to be Naoki Urasawa's Monster, everything about it is great! The characters, the plot, the twists, the soundtrack and the ED "For the Love of Life" is awesome.

The only thing that i dislike is that its a tide bit too long for no reason, some episodes felt like a filler.

If I had to pick just one, I'd pick Madoka Magica. It got me back into Anime after a year long hiatus and I really enjoyed the character and plt development within it.

Right now it would be Spice and Wolf because i really enjoyed the show, the character development, plots and it was really unique anime. I don't think i will ever find anime similar to spice and wolf. (Correct me if i am wrong)

Mushishi.

Many stories unrelated but related, about men, women, young people, old people, nature, poetry and philosophy. If i had to pick one, yea, that would be Mushishi for sure.

I think I would go with The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, it has a little bit of everything I love about anime.
It also pops in a my head from time to time, and is fairly rewatchable.

Chosing objectively which is the best anime made, of course it must be something like Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi or Monoke Hime, but...

If I'd have to leave to an island for forever, without anything else... Shakugan no Shana, S1. I can just watch it over and over again. Animation and such is far from movie quality, but the overall story-telling just pulls me in.

Picking just one is unreasonable to me.

For that reason I'll just say Gintama for now.

Clannad.

Makes you laugh, cry, and really makes you appreciate all the things in your life which you may take for granted. The romance aspects are moving, the comedy is top-notch gut busting at times and I swear I cried a dozen times during that series. So good.

Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Every time I watch it - and it's been about 6 or 7 times by now - I take something new out of it. It's not something I've seen accomplished anywhere else, not without falling into dull philosophical tangents or subverting every expectation. You can still watch NGE as a high quality Super Robot anime if you want.

Lol.

Honestly, I'm shocked at how many have said Clannad though. I didn't think there were this many slice of life fans. Although I have to admit, I did cry watching Clannad AS.

It's not dead.

I might have to change my answer. I've seen some pretty amazing shows lately :x This was harder now that I've put much more thought into it.

Get the novels. They're so amazing and have a bit more detail and few more scenes. Also, Spice & Wolf S2 second arc skipped a very, very important chapter in the story - Novel #4 - and jumped to Novel #5.

Just understanding the character's thinking, thoughts and feelings gives you a clear understanding of who they really are. Horo is really fearsome to meddle with in arguments or even having a speech with her - The anime doesn't portrait it very well like in the novels.
