new android phone candidate
megido-rev.M:
The video decoding hardware in phones currently just decode 8-bit video, meaning all the work will be pushed to the CPU for 10-bit.

Oh... i see! Then it's the phone makers' fault for lagging behind the times. :-\
I didn't even know there was video decoding hardware in phones. *can't really imagine how that works*
kitamesume:
1080P 8Bit is playable for most quad-cores, most ARMs has Hardware Acceleration but thats a hit-or-miss, and 10Bit Hardware acceleration isn't possible, even on the Desktop PC.
for phones though 10Bit is manageable, but you need at least a quad-core A9 or better to get a decent playback for 720P 10Bit.
as of this time 1080P 10Bit still isn't playable for the most part, although deadfish's encodes sometimes could playback smoothly.
edit: if you want to decode 1080P 10Bit encodes though, you might wanna look at incoming Atom Bay-trail, no i doubt the Phone Bay-trail would have enough Ghz to decode a full blown 1080P 10Bit, but the tablet Bay-trail should have enough.
if you don't understand what this is, Intel decided to launch processors to compete against the IPad, Nexus7 or Galaxy Tabs.

Oh. .__."
That's actually kinda interesting. I assumed 10-bit worked exactly the same way as 8-bit, because after installing a 10-bit capable player i never had any issues with it at all. So i didn't have to look it up or troubleshoot before. Now i'm getting more curious about how it works. :P
The problem with 8-bit is that it doesn't seem to be used that much anymore, so it might get difficult finding the show i wanna see in 8-bit (and good quality, if it's blocky it wouldn't be worth watching on the big screen to begin with). But i guess i'll just grab a hdmi cable and try to use the laptop for video playback. >__>;

Ah well, i already bought the phone now and the original reason for that wasn't the need of a hand-held video decoder. I really just needed a portable and customizable organizer-alarm hybrid, as i tend to space out irl. ;)
It was just one of the reasons i got the latest and greatest instead of some random device.
If it doesn't do the job, as written above, i will resort to the laptop. For some reason i used to assume that it would be difficult to get the video from the laptop to the tv screen, apart from my old man's possible complaints about it. xD'
Gotta man up if i wanna watch those hd videos!
megido-rev.M:
It's mainly new encodes that are using 10-bit.
