I try to avoid anime with needless amounts of ecchi fanservice. Complaining about people hating on fanservice is just as annoying if not more.

Sorry for being annoying, it just annoying that every single review, podcast and youtube video on hearth doesn't inform me on the plot or quality of the Anime and just it trash for being "FS".

I had a tl;dr here even though I read many of the posts (including the 1st post).

What I think is that anime that contains fan service can be considered in 3 groups.
Warning: This is my opinion. It may or may not correspond to reality.

* (about 85%)Ecchi everywhere. The plot is made for ecchi, screw everything else. Camera is forced to positions where ecchi is the main focus and the whole premise is clear right from the synopsis, the categories and from the first 5 (or so) minutes. This is an Ecchi show, period(!).
Good examples: To-love-ru (specially the latest seasons), KissXSis (specially the Manga/OVA).
* (about 15%)The plot makes sense, the ecchi is not forced, it's part of the way it works and all the development makes sense if it were to happen in real life (if it contains fantasy/sci-fi). These shows usually are not "packed" with ecchi but it just keeps reminding us that it is an ecchi show. These ones are a bit tricky because they can easily derail into the 3rd one.
Good examples: Chokotto sister, B Gata H Kei
* (about 10%)WTF?!?! This story was so good but then they start throwing panty shots or moves out of nowhere?!?! Well... These are those shows that are ruined by the fanservice. I got soo p*ssed off that I don't remember any example. Just think like Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica but they would start throwing fan service at episode 10. Hard to believe? Well, there are studios that dare to do it, for some reason, and wham! Show destroyed by the fan service. Bye bye. Note: Those % are not wrong, it's just that these groups overlap each other a bit.
It's for the 1st that I love some fan service and like fan service (depends on the show). It's for the 2nd one I just LOOOOOOOVE fan service and it's for the 3rd one I HAAAAAAATTTEEEEE fan service.

I still remember how natural the ecchi went on B Gata H Kei. It developed into a romance all the way that an ecchi show is allowed to show... IMO, the manga developed better than the anime, but both were really good and an example of how to use nudity and ecchi for a nice story.

Your classification make sense, and it matches what I was thinking about FS, you put more clearly than I could.

I enjoy the 2nd type of FS when it is a compelling concept or story, and don't like the 3rd type because it is just random.

brunoais:
I think ecchi haters are mostly ppl who started watching anime that fall into the 3rd one because it sounded like a good story and there was no warning that it would be an ecchi show, it only sounded like it would contain very low ecchi like skimpy cloths (the level of parent service, mostly).
And because they don't like ecchi, they didn't even try to experience the other two, so they become ecchi haters because ecchi just ruined the shows they liked.

QuickSilvyr:
Amusing topic actually if you look at the art of fanservice. I'll just say Agent Aika pantsu counter.

Don't take everything that is meant to be entertaining so fucking serious. Watch it, enjoy it, collect it. If you don't enjoy it then don't collect it. Forget it. It's not like you bought the BR disks. Make up your own fucking mind instead of mainstreaming your thoughts.
If you like it, like it.
Fuck the rest.
It's you who watches it. Not 10000 other ppl who post their thoughts or did they already map your mind?
