You can keep the psychoanalysis for yourself. As for the HoTD PV ... you must be new to anime if you didn't know where the show was going.
Or maybe he just doesn't watch PVs, something I rarely do, either. And I too didn't know that HotD would be something like this myself before I watched it.
As for fanservice, I don't mind it when I expect it. It's when I don't expect it that it could be a problem.
His complaint was that HoTD didn't give viewers any indications that the show was going to be Ecchi, I just gave him the PV proving that the show was being marketed as a Pantyshootfest.
But like I said, if he didn't watch the PV (assuming that's the case) and only read the basic gist of the plot (students trying to survive a zombie outbreak), you'd have very little go by. That's the mistake I made when picking this show: I went solely on the premise and didn't dig deeper until it was too late. Do note that I still liked the show, but the fanservice did tick me off at times and made me enjoy the show less than I might have otherwise.
How do you choose animes to watch ? Maybe I am the only person who choose from Anime blogs and following Youtube PVs.
I go mainly by:
1. Genre – I have a strong affinity for comedy, slice of life and romance. it's how I managed to sit through all those harem shows without getting sick of them, like a lot of others do.
2. Art style – If it looks appealing, chances of me being interested is higher than otherwise.
3. Synopsis – What's the plot of the show (if it has any)? Do note that a show with no plot can still have as much chances to be watched than one with a 'serious' plot.
4. Studio – It's not really a deal-breaker in most cases, though I will try anything KyoAni or SHAFT spits out (favorite studios). And J.C. Staff have also proven their worth to me lots of times, so I often end up watching their stuff, too.
Optional:
5. PVs – Usually only of shows I'm really interested in, though even then I'll just go by instinct.
6. In-depth preview, like ANN's Anime Spotlights.
7. Familiarity with the source material (assuming it's an adaptation – Considering I very rarely read manga or otherwise, this usually doesn't apply.
8. Blog commentary – An anime praised at Random Curiosity or similar blog site can often end up being watched by me.
