Which SERIOUS, adult (non-cutesy) anime do I NEED to see?
« on: March 17, 2013, 09:15:57 PM »
Heres my personal list of old favourites, so you can get an idea of the style & feel of anime I prefer. I've seen quite a lot in my time since I was a kid. My old man used to record a lot of the Manga on channel 4 back in the day, and he had a friend who was THE man to talk to when it came to comics/manga and anime, so I was pretty well exposed, but yesterday I watched a REALLY good anime that was RIGHT up my street: Twilight of the Ancient Master. It felt unfinished and had broken continuity (I know why though, it was based on a graphic novel, which would be impossible to capture in less than an hour of video). Another thing about oldskool anime I love, is how the english dubs would usually have WAY better soundtracks than the originals (Cyber City UK version for example).
Anyway heres the list, in no particular order, except the top few are my all time faves. If theres anything along these lines that I haven't mentioned, please tell me about it:-

-Ninja Scroll (the movie of course, I thought the series was an insult)
-Akira
-Ghost in the Shell (the 1st movie, and certain episodes of both series)
-Cyber City 808
-Golgo 13 (Queen Bee, I haven't watched the pro yet)
-Fist of the North Star (the old movie)
-Time Etranger
-Perfect Blue
-Violence Jack (only episode one, I thought the other 2 were just... no)
-Bloodreign
-Wicked City
-Vampire Hunter D 1 & 2
-Urotsukidoji (the "Hentainess" kind of makes it a guilty pleasure, but still a fun watch)
-Goku Midnight Eye
-Berserk
-Shigurui (not oldskool, but I like it)
-Texhnolyze (same as above)
-Kai Doh Maru (VERY unfinished/broken feel about it, but has an amazing atmosphere and mystique, good eng dub too)
-Mad Bull 34 (I dont really like comedy at all, but I really enjoyed this somehow. Classic oldskool sh*t)
-Patlabour
-Wrath of the Ninja (Terrible compared to Ninja Scroll, but still, its a LOT better than Ninja Resurrection!)
-Doomed Megalopolis
-Angels Egg (Quite rare and obscure, which is easy to understand if you've seen it, its VERY beautiful though)
-Twilight of the Dark Master
-Sword of the Stranger (had some REALLY annoying comedy moments, but very well made and entertaining!)
-Crying Freeman (Bought the live action on DVD when I was a kid, which I loved, just like the anime!)

RIGHT! Im out of ideas. I mentioned everything I can think of in my head, and in my anime folder. I know theres quite a few bits here, but theres gotta be more! Yesterday was PROOF of it!!

Thanks in advance!

Planetes. Realistic sci-fi; tads of comedy, but character evolution is stunning...

Off the top of my head:
Kemonozume
Sky Crawlers
Twilight of the Cockroaches (I'm serious)
Gosenzosama Banbanzai! (skip it if you don't like plays)
Domain of Murder
A Wind Named Amnesia

You've probably already seen these, but forgot to list them:
Ghost in the Shell
All other Satoshi Kon anime besides Perfect Blue (which you listed)
Non-cutesy Ghibli like Grave of the Fireflies and Princess Mononoke

Thanks guys for the recommendations! I'll check these out starting tomorrow if I can, I actually have Claymore on DVD, the full set lol, I cant believe I forgot to list it! It was a good series and the main characters felt well fleshed out. Monster is another one I forgot to add, a really good psychological thriller.

I didn't forget Ghost in the Shell, its 2nd from the top among my all-time faves! Ghibli movies are also probably the only "family friendly" movies I'll make sure to watch. I loved Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Nausica & Princess Mononoke (although IIRC Mononoke wasn't for kids?). I've only seen a bit of Fireflies, I tried to record it on Film4 when they had a Ghibli marathon, but missed more than half of it FFS...

Bokurano
Mnemosyne
Redline
Hellsing Ultimate  - (random bits of stupid comedy, but still awesome)
Cowboy Bebop (some comedy)
Black Lagoon (some comedy)
Jyu oh Sei
Ergo Proxy
Kara no Kyoukai (A series of movies)
Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom
Darker than Black: Kuro no Keiyakusha

You also need to watch the GitS TV shows properly, and then watch Solid State Society.

Ops, I think I'm seriously getting blind :P

Edit: Could you mention which episodes you think are worth seeing of the two series? I've put them on hold since I wasn't as impressed by the first episode.
...and judging from what kind of anime you like, it seems share your taste :)
Edit2: Thanks for the pm!

I wouldn't suggest Ergo Proxy. It's a "love it or hate it" kind of thing and personally, it was one of the worst animes I've ever seen.

By the way, if you liked Claymore but wanted more or didn't like how annoying Raki was... check out the Manga. The anime actually diverts from the manga really heavily when they go to Pieta, and there's a lot more to Claymore in the manga. It's still ongoing even. It's one of the few mangas I actually bother to read... xD

Ah and let me throw some more to the list...

Code Geass - a little comedy here and there, but it tries to be a fairly serious series and you pretty much have to watch it
Baccano! - there's some comedic relief in the form of Isaac & Miria, but the show is mainly very serious
Beck
Canaan
Elfen Lied - it kinda has a cutesy element to it, but... it's pretty freakin' hardcore... more murder than you can shake a stick at.
SDF Macross (or Robotech)
Macross Frontier
Witchblade
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood - has a little bit of comedy, but it's a fairly serious series
Trinity Blood - starts out a little lighthearted due to the main character's temperament, but it gets pretty serious

I watched Ergo Proxy (up to a certain point) a few years back, when it was new IIRC, and I thought it was okay. Nice futuristic locations, good art quality, main character seemed like a "sophisticated badass" (lol) which I thought was cool (instead of a cute, innocent looking, anime stereotype girl with guns, it was a cool, serious & moody woman with a 12-guage!). It had its comedy moments and a few characters that felt a bit too cute, which irritated me, but thats not why I stopped watching it. I cant even remember why I stopped, I probably just lost interest.

If I made an OVA (yea keep dreaming mate) it would be some GRITTY sh*t. The characters would look serious (no huge eyes & gravity defying hair, no helium voices, my women would sound like women, not like mice), the story would include a lot of adult subject matter, a lot of controversial stuff that might offend certain people, but paints a dark picture of a world thats similar to our own, realistic, but exaggerated. Thered be a fair bit of violence, but it'd be more realistic, and I'd try to make the violence "upsetting", like it is in films such as "This is England" or "Ill Manors", rather than entertaining like it is in FOTNS or any other hyper-violent anime (but I LOOOOVE FOTNS).

I watched Barefoot Gen the other day anyway, Id heard of it before but never checked it. I wasn't too sure about it at first. They make it look like a kids cartoon, but then shit hits the fan, or should I say payloads hit the ground? Pretty disturbing stuff man. All 3 major players in WWII commited some unthinkable atrocities, none of which can EVER be forgotten, or "sweeped under the rug". Yea, I cant say I really enjoyed watching little kids faces peeling off and their eyeballs melting, but Im glad I watched it, very hard hitting and direct, which are 2 qualities I really like in my movies!

Thanks again, I'll post back when I've seen some of whatever I try out next LOL! I'll probably check Planetes seeing as it was the first suggestion, I dont want anybody to feel ignored!

Genocyber
Wounded Man
Dallos

Awesome thread!   I'd add Kaiji to the list, even though it sounds like you MAY find the animation style questionable.

I never fully understood why WHR is so highly regarded. Sure, the show is rather good but Darker Than Black used pretty similar plot and premises and did a much better job.

Or maybe it's just me having issues with passive main characters being passive for no visible reasons.

@Fool010. Sure, Darker than Black is nice and all, but I really can't see to be at level of WHR. I can't really explain it really well, but maybe the shear passiveness of the character might be the reason. There is just something about WHR that is just more mature in a way.
