Which anime series have you bailed out from and why?
« on: March 21, 2013, 05:58:14 AM »
Which anime series did you start but just couldn't finish because it wasn't your cup of tea (it's wasn't to your liking) or you just couldn't get into it for whatever reason?

There are series I never start because I know they don't fit my tastes so that should prevent this problem, however based on all the positive reviews I read about Clannad I started to watch that series recently. The initial episodes pointed to some weird alternate reality (that doll made from garbage) which I found puzzling but interesting, however the series quickly just turned into some adolescent fantasy of a male surrounded by a lot of cute ditzy girls and his adventures with them. I read the series was emotional, I got up to episode 9 which seemed to finally wrap up the starfish saga (I felt like jumping out of a window if I had to be subjected to any more episodes about those starfish) but I felt nothing at the moment which I assume was supposed to be emotional peak of that storyline. I think part of the reason I felt nothing was I just didn't buy the character development, most of the characters felt more like caricatures. Anyways that was the moment where I knew I had to bail out from the series, it just wasn't for me. To sum it up, it just felt too juvenile for me. No offense to anyone who loves the series, different strokes for different folks.

Oh man. I had a lot before my OCD kicked in and I had to finish all the ones I thought were trash but still watchable.

The only ones I still have dropped are:

Deadman Wonderland It's so terrible. What a horrible way of putting together death, vulgarity, and just utter nonsense. Terrible scripting, characters, and non-realistic plot. It was like they took the movie Death Race and instead of racing, it's a theme park where it's just a rampage of death and gore. A lot of things are just over exaggerated to such an unbelievable degree. Decided to finish it. It's rated 1/10.

The only other one is GJ-bu and it's only dropped because around episode 3 or 4 there is this disgusting spider. First time I ever saw a spider in anime and it was the worst kind. Eek. I have arachnophobia.

Oh, I guess I technically dropped Naruto Shippuuden. No battle should take six episodes to complete. What a drag...

I somewhat wished I dropped more, because watching a lot of crappy anime to the end seems to have deteriorated part of my life.

Lets see.

Bleach - Everything after the Soul Society arc wasn't necessary.

Brigadoon - Too kiddie for me.

Gunslinger Girl - I had moral complications with this. Less about them using girls as weapons, more about them emotionally stunting them. And the pace of the show wasn't to my taste.

Kampfer - Just so many things wrong with it, going so far to emasculate the male lead as to literally remove his testicles... He was seriously girlier than any of the other female characters...

Kurokami - Main female's voice (both Eng and Jap) annoyed me into dropping it by the 4th episode.

Maze Mega Burst Space - English dub was god awful, and the Japanese dub was just as bad.

Naruto - Because reasons.

Needless - I hate parody anime, and can't believe that a "Seinen" would parody a shounen and screw up this bad.

Welcome to the NHK! - Watched the first 5 episodes... The fact that the majority of the episodes took place in his paranoid conspiracy theorist fantasies pissed me off so much that I had to get rid of it and rate it a 1/10. I'd rate it a Zero, but they didn't give that option on MyAnimeList.

One Piece - I hit this one in different sections because it bores me for the most part. Now I'm just done with it.

Princess Resurrection - Couldn't stand it. The art was so bland, the male lead was so pathetic, its just not worth my time.

Cromartie Highschool - Its just not my type of comedy.

Suzuka - It was terrible in every regard. I kept watching, hoping it would get better, and it didn't.

Tokyo Majin - The art style was gnawing at the recesses of my mind, slowly driving me insane. That, and they never once let up with the tension by using some sort of comic relief. Hell, even the "relationship" moments were tense.

Yumekui Merry - Something about it just didn't work for me.
Seinen and Slice of Life cannot describe the same title, because daily life is too boring to be called a plot. Ecchi/fanservice is not plot either.

Same thing happened to me for Clannad. I'll also mention Lovely Complex: could not stand Risa personality and the character design.
My list - Truth is a double-edged sword, with no handle.

Fairy Tale - it's plot was bad in my opinion. I like series where people have powers etc... though Fairy Tale didn't really appeal to me  (and yet i watched ~100+ episodes). Finally, after watching that much, i gave up, it just lost any value in my eyes, it's also kinda childish.

And, for the same reason as Heartvivian, i watch crap series that i've started because of my so-called OCD.

I've dropped a lot of anime, and I've only got one reason for each and every single show I've dropped:

It sucked ass.

Upotte! After 3-4 episodes. I couldn't tell the girls apart, they were so... generic! Excess fanservice, no plot and deadly dull characters...
I love Strike Witches! I love Girls und Panzer! But Upotte? Missed the target completely...

Dog Days: 5 episodes in. Too childish. The characters were fairly dull too.

Neckogami: 2 episodes. I couldn't picture that the MC was a girl-cat! It just didn't register. Ruined it somehow. It was 'for kids' but otherwise looked OK. Just... stale.

There's a few series I tried to watch but failed to "get my attention" yet I may watch them later...

@HeartVivian: Too bad about the spider, GJ-Club is really something! Every episode is so "random" yet true to the characters & storyline. It's really grown on me! No more spiders that I can recall...

@bpfoley89: Thanks for the "quick reviews"! A couple of those were on my "?maybe" list, but now get moved to the "unlikely" list...

Bakemonogatari - I was going to watch this and got past the 2nd episode, but then I read alot of peoples' comments saying it was a harem. Immediately dropped it.

Zegapain - It was cool up until the 10th episode.

I think that what not to watch is a suggestion just as much as what I should watch and don't follow the logic of moving this. It does fit here true. Some of us though don't go to discussions but follow the suggestion category to find out what to watch .. and what not to watch.

Yes, there are lots of girls. But... I wouldn't really call it a harem. It's closer to a harem deconstruction. The lead makes his choice in the beginning and is faithful to her, otherwise he knows that she will either take his manhood or outright kill 'em :P

For me, there should have been several series that I should have gave up on, but I didn't (copious amounts of alcohol pulled me through them). Clannad, Blood-C and Baccano in particular. All of those were just awful.

The only series so far, that is so bad that not even alcohol can get me through it, is Higurashi. Damn. I despise every character in the series. Seriously. I want all of them to die. It was great when they all did, then the next episode... they were back. I was so pissed. I made it through two resets before I gave up. The supposed "mystery" and plot is dull as hell, and I couldn't stand the characters, so it was forever dropped and deleted from my hard drive.

What makes me drop things generally are, in no particular order:

- Japanese Mindfuck, existentialism. I can't stand it tune out, when I watch Evangelion I skip all the shit and only watch the the fight scenes, I dropped psycho-pass because of that too. Sure anime can ask important questions, but being convoluted on purpose is not the same as being smart.

- Loser main character. Unless you have Gasai Yuno has support lead, don't cast a complete loser like Guilty Crown.

- Derivative : High School DxD was dropped because of that ... I saw Queens Blade's and Korewa Zombie, I have seen enough nonsensical Echhi pantyfest for my own sanity.

- Genre bender / Gay. I can support Yuri when it is done to have dating jokes without inserting a male character in the show, like it is was done in Upotte! with Aug and Vividred Operation with Wakaba. Ranma 1/2 was fun, but don't fuck with my mind.

- The underlying theme doesn't interest me : I can support Moe Blob when they did it with guns and tanks for Upotte! and Girls und Panzers. Make it about mountain climbing and you lost me forever.

None. Some are stalled waiting for subs, if too difficult to finish raw, or I make a short pause, but I always finish.

Those comments lied! It's NOT a harem! I know, I watch a lot of harem comedies  :)

There's an underlying story that connects all the -monogatari series, which makes sense because that's how the novels were too. The female characters the MC Male encounters (including his own sisters!) are only secondary to his main love interest.  Or Senjogahara would kill him! Or WORSE! lolz!
This gets explained as the plot moves along.
It's like a series of adventures, with characters moving in and out of the story.

I cannot recommend the series highly enough! It's the 2nd best anime I've ever seen! (Next to Cat Girl Nuku Nuku, of course...)

From what I've seen of it, it's somewhat like Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai. I can't get over the fact that the spider is there. Lol. Oh well.

I edited my previous post, I also dropped Naruto. What a drag...

Betterman - idk if its because its old, but when i watch it i feel like i could be watching anything else. It didnt catch me and i dont identify with it.

Evangelion: 2.0 - Dont take me wrong I loved NGE i watched it countless times(more then 5), for many years what was said in that anime reflected directly in my head, but all the continuations\OVAs\whatever? didnt even tried to watch them if i didnt like the start, those ovas and stuff are only for the people who watch NGE for the fighting stuff, with sucks.

Gintama - comedy for the sake of comedy (wtf??), couldn't even pass eps 4 (out of 200).

Gosick - i love dark characters, i love goth themes, i like psychological anime. When i started watching at every scene\episode i would think "another goth\emo\whatever cliche".."and another"..."and another"... cliche cliche cliche... "i'm sick totally, what a freaking wanna be something anime".

Guilty Crown - didn't liked it much, actually ended up finishing watching for other reasons but was a bit waste of time.

Bleach - The first arc\season\whatever is good, till it saves Rukia, loved it, but after that, just some product for the masses and to make money.

Yondemasu yo, Azazel-san. (TV) - Cant even remember whatching it, just know that i dropped it at the first episode.

Naruto - Too much feelers, there was a time when it was good tho.

Is still laughing about the spider comment...

I usually watch an anime to the end. Some I haven't. the two really prominent ones are:

I dropped Naruto in S2. In the second season it began with the unnerving stretching of the story scenes from 1-2 eps to 3-6 was just completely unsatisfying and very annoying. I feel cheated by the producers that want to make more profit than to really heighten the storyline.

I am fighting my inner schweinehund that is telling me to drop Monster. I am fighting to continue around eps 70+ or so...

I have only ever in my lifetime of anime dropped Shinryaku! Ika Musume and Seto no Hanayome.

Now that I think back, I don't even know why I dropped them. I guess I just downloaded them and never really bothered to finish them. Must've been because I was not in the mood or something. I'd better go pick them up again so that I can say I've never dropped an anime series.... (that I can think of)
