Windows 95 was so far ahead of the previous Windows iteration that you'd be hard pressed to argue any other version has defined the Windows desktop as much as 95 did. 98 was definitely better, but it was a minor step in relation to 95.

And they tend to drop NT and 2000, even though they both led to major innovations when they merged the business and home OSes with XP.

NT and 2000 were for personnel computers?

AS someone who actually used a Windows 3.x machine in the early 90's (my dad put there playing freecel at his workplace  ;D ), and W95 was revolutionary and a HUGE step from the previous version and it  defined how it feels to use a personal computer for me. If the interface and GUI doesn't look like 95 I have difficulties using and maybe why I am not yet fully into the Linux boat.

I am also waiting for 9, to see what happens. For me game & CAD compatibility and UI is the biggest factors.

Alternatively, on the task bar click on the network icon, then proceed with step 3 from above

That requires for the network in question to be present and visible (broadcasting SSID). It's not like in XP/7 where you had the list of all networks that you connected to at some point in the past.
