I can see a potential plot point: Midway through the show, bitchface will rat out nervousguy to prettypuss (I really can't be bothered to look up their names). Prettypuss will not believe bitchface as the whole premise would be astronomically weird. Then, just as prettypuss is going to nervousguy's house for sexy-sexy... she finds her old gym clothes and shit hits the fan.

Geez, spoiler tags maybe???

I really feel like I should stop watching this show. You know it won't end well. Question is, how many are going to
(click to show/hide)
lol

I ought to look up how much this show cost to make. Because I am curious how much more it costs to film it twice. Once with the live actors, and then again animating it.

I think the sweat is just drawn on to signify his nervousness, not that he is actually sweating. Otherwise I don't think it would be logical for Saeki to talk to him. The only girl to talk would be Nakamura.
Timing is everything in comedy!

and the guy is weak as fuck!
I mean 1 girl took off all his clothes. . . and dressed him against his will. ..

@GoGeTa006: He's a deviant submissive, what makes you think he was resisting? At least subconsciously, he wanted it to happen.

@Xycolian2332: Once you get past the weirdness of the art style? It's very good indeed! And as mentioned, Episode 04 is really, really good!

@TMRNetShark: Sexy-sexy is likely to have her own "issues". Everybody does, eh? That's what makes this show so much fun to watch! (And read) So far, so good!

I have to place my two pennies worth regarding this series and it's art style.

Many people here have been saying that this series style is going for an "ultra-realistic" approach however, those that do say this have fallen into the trap, psychologically that is.

If you take a close look at the drawing, you'll note that many scenes and the characters themselves are outlined however when you then look at features and colour, the artists have used modern art techniques and one would class the art style as "impressionist". The only features that are clearly detailed, are physical proportions and anything that must be detailed such as signs, posters, books, anything with writing etc. Take a look at the anime, look at the trees, look at the houses, you'll notice that there isn't actually any detail.

Now I've watched all the episodes so far and it's brilliant so far, the dialogue, the scenes, the music and the overall atmosphere are compelling and believable and this is why I also understand this art style as being impressionist art.

You'll not that in my 2nd paragraph, I spoke that people fell into a trap, well, the reason being is, the authors and artists want you to be immersed into the story, they've made you think and believe that it's hyper real. It shows through in the animation as well, if it was going to be hyper realistic, the animation would be smooth and accurate but several times we see characters who move along, while frames may be missing, they move in proportions to how one would normally move. This is probably one element within the animation that is realistic, but again that's in terms of proportions used as thanks to the technique of rotoscoping, our minds fill in the rest.

I really have to give the production staff a lot of credit, this is really clever and top quality, I'm really impressed with it. As such, I can't wait to see what crazy Nakamura does next although I wish Kasuga would stop being such a wimp and grow some balls.

After all that I'm suddenly remembering the cross-study I did back in school in Art and English Literature about Alfred Hitchcock and critically analysing his work.

@BronBron06: I'd say they did it just right!
Saeki's cuteness is captured really well, without making her a "generic idol girl" I add.
Nakamura in real life is far too cute! They made her much creepier for the animation which is perfect! A mix of "cute" and "psycho" that come across very well!

@MrIntruder: I totally agree! It may well have been "intentional" to have strange anime effects in the first episode or 2. Now the animation LOOKS much better (Ep 3 &4) so I wonder?
Did we just "get used to it"
Or did they change it ever so subtly?
Or both!

The main things I like in anime are: writing, characters, THEN animation quality. Aku No Hana has the first two "in Spades".

I never spoke about 'hyper realism', and I merely stated the character design looked a bit more realistic than in the manga.
There's no one in the world I'm interested in surpassing, excepted for myself.

Omg, every episode gets better! It all looks so 'simple' on the outside; but there's bloody & powerful currents just below the surface! Excellent indeed!

Episode 05

The manga is good too! But I'm not reading ahead since I want to be surprised by the anime.

He's wearing Saeki's gym clothes, because else he'd fear what Nakamura would do to him. Of course, this fear is playing right into her hands and she knows it, being the sadist that she is.

However, I don't see why he can't just ditch the clothes one way or another, tell Nakamura to go fuck herself, and deny anything if she does squeal.

I think saeki didnt understand what happened there. .. or maybe the subs made it confussing for me?

she said yes and then she said "this is the first confession ive had"

so I think Saeki just heard "I love you" and not the "I want to be in a platonic relationship"
. . .and so basically if she understood correctly she just got turned down. . .somehow like super friendzoned . ..

Boy:Hey, Wanna go on a date?
Girl: *Blushes* yes
Boy: I have something to tell you
Girl: Yes go ahead
Boy: I want you to be my friend

It's still a confession, he's asking to go out with her, not jump into bed!

In my high school, there was a particular girl who was both very pretty and very quiet. ALL us boys were scared spitless of asking her out, even though we all agreed she was pretty. Saw her at the 10 year anniversary, she was more outgoing and just as pretty! Better even! Big handsome husband, 3 lovely kids...

But I digress...

I'm confused as to the age of the characters. In the manga they seem so young, but in the anime they look & act older. Middle school, right? Grade 8? 9? In the manga they look 11, and in the anime they look 14...

So it's consistent that she's not had a confession already (they're kind of young) and that it's platonic is "understood" at that tender age... or am I just "old fashioned"?  :-\

@GoGeTa006
im watching horriblesubs version of this and the part that i think y'all are talking about she says "yes, if you dont mind its me" then "this is the first time someone has asked me out".  i think they understood each other pretty well.  he was killing two birds with one stone (asking her out but throwing that "pure and platonic" in there for the benefit of nakamura to say that he isnt a twisted pervert).  i dont think saeki was taking it as a confession of love. she was taking it a face value, 2 kids wanting to hang out with each other. although if it was "confession" (of love) that would explain her crying a little bit more. i just figured she was the weepy emotional type to play the opposite of nakamura.

@5cats
and yea i they are middle school kids as far as i can tell and thats really the only thing that bothers me about this show. being a parent of 2 middle school girls it kinda freaks me out a little lol. that being said i love the themes being explored in this as a general concept. it just wouldnt give me the willies if they were, say, 16 or so.

and @someone who asked about rotoscope anime
http://altairandvega.wordpress.com/2013/04/13/aku_no_hana_animation/   "This technique is rare to encounter in Japanese animation; the last significant and excellent uses of it were in 2009′s Trapeze or the concert scene from Sakamichi no Apollon."    doesnt give any other examples.

the art doesnt bother me at all. i think most people are making mountains outta mole hills on that regaurd. (really? a headache from low fps. isnt all anime 24 fps? maybe you mean a different term) its as it should be and if you cant get over it, dont watch it.  although i think "a scanner darkly" did it better. i watched all 5 eps so far in 2 sittings. i had heard tell that eps 2&3 were kinda slow moving, i disagree. i was on the edge of my seat through all 5 eps. this is schadenfreude in the extreme.

@MrIntruder: A hippo dancing with two little girls?
I am SO going to burn in heck for that...

@bluethegreat: I agree!
The first episode? the art did bother me, a lot! Their hair was squirming around like snakes or something! But by Ep.03 I was completely used to it.
It's different! On purpose! It "works" extremely well with the content involved.

And yes, Episodes 4 & 5 were both terrific! It's following the manga very closely, except in "art style".

Yeah their tender age makes it creepy, but that's part of the charm!
How Nakamura got SO VERY twisted? I can only guess...
Kasuga got that way from reading Baudelaire... of course!

I really am enjoying this, it's amazing, being drawn in and captivated by this series.

Yeah their tender age makes it creepy, but that's part of the charm!
How Nakamura got SO VERY twisted? I can only guess...
Kasuga got that way from reading Baudelaire... of course!

I think this series is mostly about the transitional period of puberty and the "Blossoming flower of evil" is likely to be the moments when people of their tender age begin to understand what innocence truly is. We actually hear this directly in the series from Kasuga's father telling his mother to calm down, that he's going through puberty.

This leads you to wonder, why is Nakamura so freely able to express her ideas on Kasuga? Has she lost her innocence? Has the writer decided that she has been through some form of trauma? Is she as we'd seem to think at first, psychopathic? Or maybe she actually just fancies Kasuga herself but she can't express herself because she, like Kasuga, cannot overcome her own innocence.

This is why I'm loving this anime, it's making me wonder so much about the story of the characters, keeping me anticipating the next episode. I just hope that as the series draws to a conclusion, it doesn't, like a lot of other anime, ends in a wishy washy fashion.
