Candy Candy Bluray?
thinredline:
Hello all.
I was wondering if anyone thinks that this anime series would get a Bluray release someday like other old series did (Heidi, Future boy Conan etc.)
Candy Candy is a series that marked my childhood and most of us that saw it I believe, so to see this in Bluray with very good quality would be a dream come true!!
next in line of choice, it would be "Hello Sandybelle!"

I would imagine that is probably not going to happen at any time in the foreseeable future. I suppose you're unaware of the whole Candy Candy licensing problem. I might be mistaken, but I don't think there was ever a DVD release in Japan because of the legal dispute (which took place from 1998 to 2003). Most -if not all- of the sets floating around available for purchase in various countries are bootlegs. The French, Spanish, Chilean, Korean, and Taiwanese releases are, anyway.
The only update I've heard on the situation is a CD of background music released in 2004, and a note in 2006 that the writer didn't intend to sign off on anything anymore because the whole experience was such a big headache while the court cases were in progress. I haven't heard anything since then, unfortunately. It was such a popular series I hoped to see it get some love from Toei, but I can understand them not wanting to stir up the issue again. It would be nice to see an official release one day, though.

Thank you for your reply.
I was aware of the licensing problem, but with all these DVD sets available, i thought it was solved somehow.
I mean, if there was a problem, how can they allow so many sets from different countries being sold out in the open?
But i guess it wasn't solved as you say.
Pity..
Anything about Sandybell? (or even an official DVD release with English subtiltes?)
Triltaison:
I don't know much about Sandybell's copyright situation, but it at least looks slightly more hopeful than Candy Candy getting a release. -That's simply by virtue of Sandybell actually having a page on Toei's animation database. Candy doesn't have one. If you click the link for キャンディ・キャンディ or it's movie -it isn't actually a link to a page. Toei only has a tenuous grasp on Candy's copyright, so can't display any of its images.
It doesn't look like Sandybell has a DVD release in Japan, either... I only see a DVD compilation of various openings from Toei's catalog released in '02, and some sets of dubious origins that look rather like bootlegs to me which are available internationally. I'm not aware of it having a legal dispute, so it looks possible it might get a release if Toei feels like doing the work of remastering or cleaning up their prints.
An official set with English subtitles is pretty doubtful... Older anime rarely gets picked up unless it's a cult classic with a strong fanbase like Gundam or had involvement from Tezuka. Right Stuf/Nozomi or Discotek would be the most likely to try and bring it over since they target older series and movies. They've brought over the original Cutey Honey, Rose of Versailles, Puss in Boots, and other older classics, so they'd be the ones to hope for. Though until Japan gets a release, it's pretty doubtful any company will pick it up for subtitling since the English version DVDs are usually based on the Japanese ones.
Though you never know when your wish will magically be granted, because I'm finally getting my Princess Knight release this year -and I never thought it would happen. So, remain hopeful.... but don't get those hopes too high.
thinredline:
I don't know in which country, but DVDs of Sandybell with the original Japanese language have been released (there are rips of it along with a couple of other dubs)
The thing is that they don't have English subtitles. :(
I have Sandybell (in VHSrips) in my native language, in a mediocre quality, but i always prefer to watch the original (even if I grew up with the dub).
