The meeting at the graveryard is a metaphore for the death of his past life in the Mafia. It isn't a symbol of his physical death.
Anyone refering to the scene where he gets shot on the snowy planet, well he gets shot with tranquilizer, that's why he doesn't die.
Anyone saying that he's dead because he doesn't seem to fear death, well that's how he is. He's a hero, if hero's were weak and cowardly they wouldn't be heros.
Anyone saying that he is dead because the movie refers to Purgatory, well Purgatory is only quoted by Vincent, the crazy psychopathic deranged lunatic. It doesn't mean that spike is dead.
Anyone asking me to explain how he survives falling out of a cathedral, or all those gun wounds or whatever, well it's an anime, that's how.
Spike is dead in a sens because he has forgotten his past, and doesn't have a future. That is the very essence of death. Most people who wish to die do so because they either regret something they have done in their past, or fear something that may come in their future. They want time to stop, no present, no past and no future, just nothingness. That's what Spike is feeling, emptiness. He rejects his past for most of the series, doesn't give a rat about his future, doesn't create any emotional ties with anyone (he often breaks up with he his crewmates to be sure he doesn't get emotionaly attached) and so forth, he is a dull shell of a human being. That doesn't make him physicaly dead. He is emotionaly on a certain level, but that's about it.

my last comment about this.... for now
(click to show/hide)none of those things proves he is dead they are all hints (and btw, I know that was a tranquilizer, the hint is when he says something to the effect that he's toying with me). if you have studied philosophy and religion and know the concept of purgatory then watched cowboy bebop straight through you will see there is an overwhelming number of hints pointing towards the fact that he is dead. a number of scenes suggest that it is not merely metaphorical, but physically dead (mainly referring to spike leaving julia and not seeing her till the end of the series, the flashback where they were fixing his eye and whatnot in the wierd and unexplained medical facility [cus you know, guys who leave the mafia have access to high tech medical labs], the indian guide who appears from time to time in the series, and a number of scenes from the movie ESPECIALLY the narration at the start and the end). there are soo many indications in every episode, almost every aspect of the show hints at it. the relationships, spike's almost suicidal attitude, the artwork, all of the flashbacks, I could analyze everything but that would take forever (although it does give me an excuse to watch it all again ^^).
and on a different note, vincent wasnt a crazed psychopathic deranged lunatic. he died and came back from the dead, he is pretty freaking confused about his purpose and he forgot... completely forgot... or perhaps never was told the reason he was brought back. He thought he came back to get revenge on those who wronged him (pretty reasonable conclusion for a human who was abused and died then suddenly came back to life). at the very end he remembered when he recognized electra, and that allowed him to "pass through the gate" or whatever term they used, meaning he had passed the trial. the movie was far less subtle than the series. The purpose of the movie seems to be to confirm, for those who were wandering, that spike, vincent, and vicious were indeed dead and in the trial period of purgatory.
now i for the longest time thought maybe im just misinterpreting things and spike is just metaphorically dead. But having seen the series twice all the way through, i have picked up on all the numerous hints and now i am completely convinced. dont really have anymore to say about it so if you dont believe me, rewatch the series (especially the movie) and maybe youll start to see it.

(click to show/hide)If so when what about episode 20? lol spike seemed to be afraid to die in that one? Especally when he met the guy the first time and the cat saved him

Gantz needs a sequel because I didn't get the series so they need to add on to it to clarify it more for me. Maybe if they threw some naruto fillers in there it would make more sense i guess.

--- Quote from: "Shercove" ---I agree with Fish13. There should have been a sequel to Berserk. That ending devastated me

I would have to agree with, the ending bugged the hell outta me.
RuminaX:
1. Gantz - I watched the series and there was something I loved about it but the ending was quite upsetting. After reading all the stuff in the manga all they way up to 2nd phase which started last week I have to say, there is nothing I would love to see more than see this series redone/continued however necessary. I don't doubt it's popularity would sky rocket once they get to the areas where the game really starts to reveal itself. Please if the people in charge of this had any common sense it would be continued! I would enjoy it as much as Bleach storyline.
2. Berserk - This series has definitely needed to be continued. It's one of my favorite mangas of all time and it has a good 200+ episodes it could put out. The original anime was well done but for this to happen it would have to be remade due to the fact all of volume 9 was discarded due to the intensity of it. It definitely wouldn't air on TV.
3. Tenjo Tenge - I love this anime and was quite upset about where it left off. I have yet to read the manga past that point but I'm guessing quite a bit happens.
XeroSKill:
i wouldnt watch gantz again if it continued... it was way tooo SLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it reminds me of dbz powering up taking 3 episodes to charge an attack.
