Most people I meet think I'm a stoner, not a nerd. Yet I'm a nerd nearly to the definition....
Stupid, irritating, ineffectual and unattractive. That is me.

Ignoring the fact that my hobbies are varied, my affliction to video games, music nerding, and reading things like The Black Swan for fun, I'm a nerd. I'm also ugly as sin, which is apparently necessary for a nerd? Weird.

Nerding it the hard way, are we now.

Just avoid calling yourself "normal". Because:

People always call me a nerd but the nerds always drive me away because I'm not nerdy, I don't know where I belong 

I have a personal motto I use to describe myself; you may feel free to adopt it:

"Too normal for the nerdy people, too nerdy for the normal people."


In my case, I don't feel like I fit in with either group particularly well.  I'm not obsessive about the kinds of stuff that nerds are obsessed with although I'm interested in many of the same things.  And I can socialize with regular folk reasonably well but they tend to bore me.

I think we need a name for those of us who fall between Nerds and Normals, those who socialize with both but owe allegiance to neither group.  What can we call ourselves?  Nerms?



For the record, I don't think Tiff is a nerd, but she is very single-minded and opinionated at times.  But then again, who isn't.

^ There is no such thing as a "normal" human being. We're the most abnormal creatures that walk the earth - unlike ants, worms, animals and other non-human beings. But to be more specific about the general statement of what you said - seriously man, you already know what you said is not logical to the fact that ... you watch anime, you chat daily on BBT, you talk about games, you you you and then you call yourself normal .. Teeh .... That second definition I've pointed out twice is far more than enough to define the word - nerd.

And I just got Kill la Kill Volume 1 BD, and it comes WITH AN ART BOOKLET! OMFGKLJLKAJSDLKFJLK SJ!!!! WOOOHOO!1 Fucking thing is twice the damn size of the first BD volume of Attack on Titan. I have yet to bust this thing open to check out what's inside of it. My sister saw me bring in the box today and she's like "Okay, what did you get?" and I opened the box up and I saw Kill la Kill BD and went nuts for like few seconds, took it out and tossed Attack on Titan BD Vol. 7 to the ground without noticing it ... >_>;; ..

I shall open this case today to see what's inside of it..

I had an HDD with the same issue. It was full most of the time until it decided to die

^ well, my external HDD has only 200gb of free space anymore... I've stuffed 1,6Tb of anime onto it... Afraid to fill the remaining 200Gbs... My fear is that it'll corrupt my data xD
....so, I live off with the 283Gb on my pappy, and most of the time, it has only 10-.5gb of free space....

theoretically you should only fill it up to 90% capacity. anymore and you should experience data corruption.

YOU YOU YOU need to start paying attention to what other people actually say rather than just imposing your own little thoughts on top of their opinions.  You've done that with Tiff, now you're going to try that with me?  No, not going to happen.  Let's not drop the subject since I haven't had my say.  After I post this, I'm getting ready to go to work, and I don't care what happens to this discussion.



You keep going back to that stupid dictionary definition.  It's flawed because it's trying to narrowly define a cultural term when no people can even agree as to how it should be defined.  The words 'single-minded' and 'obsessed' cut out a large portion of the people who might self-identify with the term.  I know I'm not obsessed with anything except making sure I have money in the bank and that my retirement account grows.

I'm certainly not obsessed with anime -- I've watched far more hours of TV & movies on Netflix in the last 2 months than I've watched anime in the last 2 years.  I'm not obsessed with BBT -- I left this place behind for a good 4 or 5 months last year and almost didn't come back.  I poke in here because sometimes folks have something interesting to say, but I really don't give a damn about 99.9% of the discussions about anime.  I don't keep up with this stuff the way some of you guys do.  Having hobbies and interests that don't attract a majority of the people doesn't inherently make a person obsessive.

I self-describe as "between nerds and norms" for exactly the reasons I explained previously.  I've also been described by other people as "being a relatively normal guy who happens to like sci-fi and fantasy".  I'm not exaggerating when I say I don't feel like I fit in well with either group; although I'd never be overtly unfriendly, I wouldn't hang out IRL with most people who chat here.  Maybe that just makes me snobby, I don't know.



Bottom line, Tatsu, is if you're going to pigeon-hole people into narrow definitions that they don't agree with, you'd better expect to get some vehement responses.
