Well, to be fair, many Japanese girls have to pad down their bodies anyway to fit a kimono correctly. The whole point is to give a cylindrical look, which is hard to achieve if you're an hourglass figure.
I'm lucky that I'm pretty petite in stature, so I'm not too tall (I can get an ohashori fold! yay!) nor too broad (so I don't get awkward 3/4ths length sleeves).
Thing is about kimono, they're made to be one-size-fits-all-- it's a bunch of rectangles sewn together. The only cuts that would really change would be the length, because unlike Western clothes, kimono bolts are cut and then measured.
As for Asian clothing not looking good on Caucasians... as a costumer and cosplayer, all I have to say is if you put enough time and effort into it, you can look good in it. Personally, I love kimono and I will continue to wear kimono because it is what I want to do and it is what I enjoy doing.
