In classical physics we define time to be an independent linear variable. This is because classical physics involves non-relativistic motion, and the easiest way to observe that is against time. This definition is the basis of simple equations of mechanics (v=u+at, etc).
The opposite case would be in quantum physics where time no longer has the same importance.
