I installed Start8 and it made Windows 8 just like Windows 7.

So the general consensus is Start8, huh? I will note that for future reference.

I went from xp to 7, skipping vista with no problems.

< never uses my desktop or start menu, I do everything through the explorer view. Which is very doable in 8. But I really just didn't like it. Might also be because I had no video drivers on so everything was big and ugly.

Also had trouble simply navigating, but I guess that comes with actually spending time with it.  Never the less, I'm holding out and going to try to just skip it all together.

The only windows os I skipped completely was ME. I had to use all ther other ones to one extent or another. Still do, a lot of the systems in my uni labs still run XP/Vista.

Since I always had to jump from one to another, I never really got too attached to either. If you don't BSoD me every 5 minutes like ME did. I don't mind and I will get used to it. Excessive loyalty towards anything technology wise is a really bad idea.

Win98SE was decent all the way up to XP era.

So basically, people recommend using Windows 8 instead of Windows 7 because you can make it just like Windows 7? That seems fairly redundant to me. Would you recommend it if you couldn't revert it back to looking like 7? I know I sure wouldn't.

Besides, one thing I would bet very good money on is that there will never, ever be a time when you will need to upgrade to Windows 8. DX11.2 is totally pointless, and not only is the next version not out yet, but the lag between its release and enough people upgrading to video cards that support it for developers to start making games that use it is going to be a good few years at least, let alone until games come along which won't work without it. Hell, most games still support DX9 and work just fine.

The amount of time before you will see any benefit to using the next DX version will be long enough that you can just skip straight to Windows 9, which will hopefully be better. Much better.

I have to say I hate a lot about Win8. It's an insult to the user in more ways than one.

But it does work like lighting compared to the turtle that is seven.

Because we can!

Oh, I never said that. I don't even use the after market start menu.

I use win 8 for three reasons.

It feels faster. It manages multiple cores better. Win 7 simply looks old whenever I have to sit back to it. In that order.

Make that four, I like the new keyboard short cuts they implemented with the windows key.

Do you run it on HDD? Because I doubt I would feel much improvement in speed on SSD. A few milliseconds is negligible.

I would rather disable that crap if possible and I don't really need the start button anymore. With the G600's hotkeys, I have one to pop open My Computer and I have split My Libraries and Favorites with short cuts for personal folders and specific directories for computer stuff. Is it possible to disable those things that come out from the edges?

No. MetroUI is just the thing that turns everyone off from 8 and it's easily fixable. There are plenty of improvements added to 8.

One key thing to note especially is that Chkdsk can now check your current active drive while you're using it.

Would I recommend switching your OS now to 8 if you had no plans to change to a new OS? No, no I wouldn't. But if you're doing something that requires you change operating systems then you may as well, especially if you're anything like me and once you install an OS you probably won't ever uninstall it.

It was 3 years from Vista to 7. 7 years from XP to Vista. I really doubt Windows 9 would come out any earlier than 2015. If you can wait until then, maybe wait for 9. But with the way MS is going... 9 is only going to be even more "modern" than 8, and 10 is going to be a cloud OS.

By the time 10 comes out, I hope windows no longer has the monopoly. Game devs just need to take the first step and shake off the shackles of DX API and start using OpenGL/CL/AL or even make their own API.

humm...

I've done a good job today.
I was wondering what was the web address of a certain site. I couldn't remember it, which is given, even though I normally ALWAYS remember it. I just never remember it when I need it.
Today was exceptional because, I managed to find the site using 2 key words on Google.
Then later, after I had gotten what I needed from the site, I decided, I should add this into my bookmarks.... Then I notice it already was in there.

Mother fucker, I want Google to step up in the Operating System market for PC and I want them to smash the shit out of Windows. I know they can do it. Look at what they've done with Android ever since they've taken over! The only question is would third party developers support Android on PC.

Yes. I'm not yet rich enough to put >1tb worth of NAND on my laptop :D

But fine, that's 1/4. You've still three to discount.

They already have Chrome OS and it sucks more horribly than you can possibly imagine. They decided, in their infinite wisdom, that people only use their computers to browse the internet so they made their OS only browse the internet as one big chrome browser without all that "extra" stuff that nobody needs anyway.

...complete idiots lol.

As a gamer I would rather see Valve OS. Optimized for gaming, no more brute forcing it's way through multiple layers any more.

Then again it is exactly the brute force that makes "Win8 is faster" argument utterly worthless for my rig.
