Trying to back up one of my hard drives (with 983GB of data) onto my new external, but Windows seems disinclined to let me just use the copy and paste commands. It keeps hanging randomly partway through for no apparent reason ¬_¬

So I've had to fall back to the old MSDOS command "xcopy" instead, which - after a few false starts - is working really well. It's quite amusing how this ancient command line program is still far superior to the functionality included in Windows explorer, several decades on. It's faster, more flexible, and seems to be much more reliable too (no crashes yet). So much for modern technology, I guess.

Use Acronis True Image, it's worked for me perfectly every time.

Hasn't robocopy replaced xcopy?

Anywho, one of the first things I install on Windows is Teracopy. I can't stand the native copy operations for the reason you mentioned :P

True, I actually only discovered Robocopy after I'd already set xcopy off doing its thing, or I'd probably have used that instead. It does seem more powerful (though also less easy to get to grips with).

And, as a rule, I make a point of not clogging up my computer with extra software to do fundamental tasks like this unless I absolutely have to. And if I have absolutely no other choice, I always prefer to get a standalone application that doesn't need to be installed (installing lots of programs slows down Windows far more than it ought to, even if you uninstall them again afterwards). So I probably won't be giving Teracopy or Acronis a go any time soon, though I can well believe they're a big improvement over Windows explorer :P

Well, Acronis has functionality you can't really get in Windows. You can make a perfect clone of a HDD and it has much better partition management and even destruction algorithms to run on a HDD in case you ever needed to RMA it (or give it to a friend or whatever) after you clone your data off it.

Yeah, if I ever needed to make a system image or something then Acronis would be useful. I prefer gparted for partition editing though - it's always better to not edit partitions from within Windows in my experience, even on non-system drives.

Anyway, I've had to switch to robocopy in the end now anyway. I'd forgotten there was a symlink in one of the directories I was copying, and xcopy failed when it hit that (since I'd not set the right flag to deal with that). Since xcopy doesn't have an option to leave all existing files untouched without overwriting, I had to switch to robocopy.

Copying some files from one place to another really should not be this much effort. But I've wasted hours on it now :(

Ok, I suppose some of you are going o school at the moment ( uni do not count for purposes of this question) -  is the only thing you have to do to get a diploma is to show up for graduation?
I do get a feeling that these students I have right now got their diplomas just for showing up at graduation.
I do not get how can people be so clueless and think its mean to get a lower grade for submitting their paper after the submission time. AND I was generous I even extended submission time by week AND told them that they will get lower grade if they will miss this second date. I even reminded then to submit their papers few times and the excuse they came up with is - oh I forgot, maybe will submit it later if I have a time for it.....morrrrrrrrrr rrrrrrrons
Don't stress over it. Work like how you do your job. You, of all people, I respect the most. Educators are less respected in this day and age. Just do what you need to do and if they don't want to work hard for their future, then give them the grade they earned. Don't over think it, don't be soft at heart. If they ask "why" then tell them what they need to hear. :P

I guess I have to be more strict, but I do not want to fail them, this is one of the last things they have to do to get diploma. But I guess, there is no problems if they have a barely positive mark.

They do that because they don't respect you so they think they can blow you off and just walk all over you. It's a core personality thing that people instinctively see and prey upon.

You'll notice how some classes can have the same students and be like a wild circus but then you put a different teacher in there and suddenly it's like they fear for their lives and are perfectly behaved model students. It's the persona you give off and your presence. If you have a weak demeanor they'll just trample all over you.

Be an alpha. Make examples of anyone that steps out of line. You can joke around and be a little carefree but you also have to be stern, serious, and strict. You can't take any shit. Get advice from other teachers you know do well. In the end it's all about how the students perceive you.

It might help you to take some cognitive/social psychology and/or maybe something for public speaking.

I do not think that its a problem with just me. I have noticed, that they do not do what they are supposed to do a lot and if they do something its not as good as it should be.  I met few other students last year and saw what they did for a class and I was horrified to see that something like that was approved by teachers.....
I think in this case some of the fault could be lied on teacher before me as I understand she did nothing if they did not do what they were supposed to. Oh and almost half of the class has been expelled before I even met them. But then again, it is my fault as well. I am new at this and I do not know all that I should to do.

Why did you extend the date? Why did you even allow them to submit after the date? If you don't stick to your own requirements why do you expect them to?

Because we can!

Are you teaching college freshmen? That would explain it. Statistically speaking, most kids nowadays never make it past their 2nd term before dropping out.

here's to prussian punctuality. It's expected of us and if we do not comply we'll have to deal with the trouble, in my case drop out of the uni or pay humoungous late-fees on admin work. The only time I missed a deadline for homework was in school (for the signature on a mid-term) and the mark of my midterm was turned into a 6 (essentially 0/100)^^ And yes we had to have our parents sign that tehy acknowledged teh mark and I got around 85% on that one....

Because it is a part of a bigger paper, that they have to write to get their diploma. I would rather see parts of it to correct first instead of whole thing at once and all at once.
Because even if they do not submit these parts they still can pass if they submit the whole thing in the end, all I can do is give a lower grade :( stupid school rules. Beside for these who did not submit the work there is a 1 in a journal thing :) 4 of 11 did not submit a thing.

Harpy, you have your own life. Why worry about people who don't give a flying fuck about their future? These young kids are irresponsible - they are relaying on their parents or those who feed them and give them shelter. This is what's so wrong about this society. The only wise ones are the ones who work hard for their future.

Has anyone looked into that fucking stupid teen who screwed her life up with that fake marijuana? As much as I feel sorry for her, she's the one who decided to ass fuck her life with doing something illegal. Hope she learned her lesson and recovers well and quit doing stupid shit.

In reality, if you are OK with the way you are living - then no problem. Live the way you are living. This applies to those young teens.

You don't have to be strict. Just give them the credit they worked or didn't work hard for. Simple as that. Don't round up grades or give passes to those who don't work hard. I mean, this is just my pure opinion. Why are you stressing over people who don't give a shit about their grades? Don't stress it. Your life is more important than anyone else. Or so I have it as a rule of thumb. And then again, enjoy life. Like ... watch anime! :P

Anyone watched Jormungand lately? I'm re-watching it while scramming for photos. Got like 2K+ on my Feeds to look into. I piled that shit very high.
