I think it depends on how many people you are in contact with /friends with via online vs how many people you are friends with locally.

I think I just turned into an audiophile. Xonar Essence STX add-on card with Shure SHR840 blew me away .. and the audio is much more detailed with the right audio file types like FLAC, DTS and PCM files. Glad I saved all of CoalGirls stuff, they did the right thing with audio!

Hmm hmm ... I want more pro headsets now.

Yeah, good sound cards with good output equipment completely destroy my perceptions of "high quality audio." There's a huge change from 256kbps to 320kbps that is pretty easy to miss when using on-board sound. Yet to try 320 vs lossless, but I don't own that gear. I tried it out at a friend's place and hooo-leeee shit it's weird that I can happily use my gear knowing that there is a significant advantage to getting a soundcard

Motherboards built in the last few years have plenty good audio cards for 99% of people. Unless you are mixing or something....

There's also a huuuuuuuuuuge advantage to getting an external amp. But most people won't do that either.

If you're talking about mixing music, like DJing, then no, you don't need hq audio. If you're talking about mastering/producing, then yes. Or at least you should, otherwise you're just doing it wrong.

When I went to visit Maclaren the other day I got given a bag with a set of headphones which they normally give to sponsors etc. I just got round to trying them out, and they're really good! :| They're louder, crisper, and have much better bass than my Sony ones (which are pretty good themselves). I wasn't very impressed when I saw them, but I think I got lucky there.

They do seem to suffer from a slight bit of background noise, but it's fairly steady and not too bad. They also require two AAA batteries to run. I have no idea what make they actually are either, so I can't look up the specs or see how much they normally cost. All they say is "Vodaphone Maclaren Mercedes".

Actually, listening some more, I kind of feel like the bass might be artificially boosted. Though equally, I might just be totally unused to having drivers this powerful in a pair of headphones. It's hard to tell.
