Actually a little alcohol is better for your liver than no alcohol, because it keeps the detox mechanisms running. Same with smoke btw (although the second-hand smoke already more than covers the necessary amount to keep DNA-repair up to speed).
The health effects of moderate alcohol consumption aren't that straight foward. While low alcohol consumption is associated with lower risks of heart diseases when compared to no consumption, it's also associated with a higher risk of several cancers. Furthermore, a causal relation is not necessarily the most parsimonious explaination for this relation since moderate alcohol consumption are generally associated with better social status(which is in turn associated with better health) as opposed to those with high consumption and no consumption who both tend to be poorer. I'm not aware of research demonstrating a mechanism.
As for smoke, I'm not aware of any study showing any benefits whatsoever at any level.
