proper age to watch anime

Shohei-kun:
I started watching anime seriously December of 2011. First one I watched was Clannad and I watched a bunch of (what I now consider REALLY bad) slice-of-life shows. I also watched Hayate no Gotoku really early which I regret to this day. I have recently rewatched it and was really excited to see all of the references I missed.

megido-rev.M:
Yeah, I doubt many kids would understand a lot of those references.

Well mine woulda been Ghost in a shell way back in 1996. I blame all the jap backpackers that we had working for us at the time. It's all their fault for showing me this awesome stuff.

SchoolDaysEX:
Pretty much when Pokémon, YuGiOh, Digimon, and Sailor Moon where dubbed on tv in U.S. Thinking back, I am glad that I watched all of them. good times.

No doubt. When I look at those shows nowadays I realize how bad they are, but the time they aired on Toonami is a very nostalgic part of my life that wouldn't want to live without. I came home every day from school and watched DBZ and YuGiOh.

So if there is a correct answer for the OP, the best time for a non-Japanese child to watch anime would be when he or she can start understanding and appreciating these introductory shows as more than "cartoons".
