Why torrent status shows as "stopped"?
« on: July 02, 2013, 04:52:30 PM »
Hello, all.

New user here.  Been reading like crazy. :D  But I've run into something that I can't find an explanation for, so I guess it's time to ask....

I'm using Vuze 5.0.0.

Being new, I decided it would be a good idea to take advantage of a couple of Freeleech torrents to help me start getting a good ratio, the intent is to continue to seed for a while once the downloads are finished (it has finished for both).  Now, here's the odd part:  One of the torrents just sits there in a queued state.  There are peers out there, and it was slow going getting any of them to attach to me to download, but things *were* moving.  Now, though, nothing.  When I go to the Details page for the torrent and check the Sources tab, the tracker status shows "stopped."  I've verified that my key is in the URL and all that.  Now, there's a second torrent which is running.  Only one peer is connected as I write this, but it is showing an upload speed so I know it's transferring data there.  When I check the same location for the tracker status on this torrent, it shows "online."

So my question is this:  Why is one torrent showing a tracker status of "stopped" while the other torrent shows a tracker status of "online?"  The running torrent is currently showing 112 seeds and 8 peers (one of which is downloading from me); the stopped torrent is showing 67 seeds and 6 peers.  What would cause a tracker status of "stopped" for one torrent while another one is running just fine?

TIA for any info/insight.

Is it really the "tracker status" that says "stopped", not the "status" column?

Unless you have, try "Force start" to make sure the torrent is running, regardless of Azureus internal queue prioritization. Or manipulate the number of torrents that are allowed to run simultaneously.

I Force start all torrents I want to have running for a long time.

In Vuze, I right-click the torrent listing line in question and select "Show Details."  On that tab, in the "Sources" tab underneath it, the line with the Tracker URL showing says "Stopped" under the Status column.  If there was a way to include an attachment, I'd include a screen shot.

However, it seems that after a day and a half of it saying "Stopped," the torrent in question has returned to "Online" status.  I have no idea what changed.  Of course, now the few peers that are showing for both torrents; none of them are  connecting to me for whatever reason, so I won't be increasing my upload count for a while.  Wheeeeee. :-)

I guess I'll keep looking around for freeleeches with some peers showing - even ones I'm not interested in personally - in order to try to get the numbers up.  I'm all for helping out (getting my number up happens by my helping others get their stuff, right? <grin>).

Thanks for the reply.  Even though the mystery remains as to why it happened in the first place....

If you want to show a screenie, just upload it to any half-decent free image host; I personally prefer Photobucket.  If you haven't already, you'll need to start an account, of course.

Once uploaded, your pictures (on just about all the services I'm aware of) will have a way, either under the pic itself or by clicking a button, to display the various ways you can link to that image; you want the one in IMG tags.  For example, the following pic:
(click to show/hide)
is displayed using the tags:
Code: [Select]
[URL=http://s196.photobucket.com/user/Bozobub/media/errorerror.jpg.html][IMG]http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa38/Bozobub/errorerror.jpg[/IMG][/URL]

The URL tags on the outside make the entire picture "clickable", so users can jump directly to the original pic's source by doing so.  If you want to disable that behavior, simply delete everything outside the IMG tags, like so:
(click to show/hide)
This  is displayed using the tags:
Code: [Select]
[IMG]http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa38/Bozobub/errorerror.jpg[/IMG]
Sorry, dunno why the code tag is italicizing that o.O' , but notice how no direct link shows now when you mouse over/click the image?

If you go back and look at the tags in a post's preview, btw, you'll notice that this forum adds image height/width info:
Code: [Select]
[URL=http://s196.photobucket.com/user/Bozobub/media/errorerror.jpg.html][img width=206 height=124]http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa38/Bozobub/errorerror.jpg[/img][/URL]
This is NOT something you have to do yourself; it's automatic.  You can safely ignore it.

If you don't want the image to display until someone WANTS to see it (as I did above), btw, which is polite and saves everyone load time and bandwidth, simply put everything in spoiler tags:
Code: [Select]
[SPOILER]Everything you want to hide, including any tags.[/SPOILER]

Note: Tags don't have to be capitalized, I just did so here for clarity.

Hope that helps.  Now you can show screenies (and any other image) w/o using attachments.  This also works on most forums that use phpBB (as opposed to HTML) formatting commands, assuming IMG tags are enabled.

Sorry, dunno why the code tag is italicizing that o.O'

The double slash is a popular indicator for a comment. The code parser assumes everything past the double slash is a comment.

That's also why your text is turning green, since green is a popular IDE color for comments. It doesn't seem to be parsing this especially well, though.

Bozobub, thanks for the useful information.  I didn't know if this forum understood bbcode or not; I guess I should have just tried it. :D

I didn't know about embedding an img tag inside a url tag before, though!  Yea, I can see where that might be a useful trick.

If I find myself needing to post a screenshot in the future, I'll be sure to go get an account with Photobucket and then link to the image that way.

Thanks again, much appreciated!

Imgur is free, reliable, and doesn't require an account.  It also gives you the bbcode necessary for embedding, so all you have to do is:

1. Drag image onto imgur.com.
2. Click "Upload".
3. Copy bbcode.
4. Paste here.

Thanks for that.  I only used Photobucket because I use them and know how they work, and also they don't ban image hotlinking to arbitrary sites/domains, unlike Imageshack.  Nor have they ever given me guff about excessive boobie pics  :-[ ...

Imageshack to my knowledge only replaces the images on arbitrary domains with frogs and forces you to view the image on imageshack or to be logged in, as long as the domain in question hasn't been registered with imageshack (which we have for BBT).
Imgur I know for a fact that doesn't allow hotlinking to torrent sites. Hotlinking to torrent sites violates the their ToS.
However I'm not sure if it applies to forums of torrent sites as well...

Oh, cool!  I'll keep them in mind, then!

Thanks for the info!

Oh.

Well, I suppose there's one way to find out if they care if you link to a forum of that type.... :D
