If you're not familiar with the 'Nasuverse' on the surface it doesn't seem too make much sense, but the further you delve into it the more fascinating it becomes. Particularly with concepts like Alaya, the Counter-Force, Counter Guardians, and Origin.
While the anime adaptation is actually pretty good, the Light Novels are much better for getting more detailed information that is only alluded to in the anime.

thats actually the case for most anime adaptations, the novels are much more detailed on top of having a larger point of view.
one of the good example is To Aru Majutsu no Index, the novel is superb while only a tiny portion of it became adapted into two series, to aru majutsu no index and to aru kagaku no railgun.

Shinsekai yori
Never watched it, but I'll also suggest Legend of the Galactic Heroes based on the things I've heard about it.

I think that Phi-Brain: Puzzle of God is along the lines of what you are looking for. It has mysteries, crimes, and intellectual puzzles that a person has to solve to move on.

Anyway I'll be doing the same thing.
Mouretsu Pirates -female lead.I know, I know. They belong in the kitchen but I guess that's why they call it Science Fiction
Golden Boy -genius pervert
Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere -I'll be honest, you won't be able to follow anything but the action. The real fun stuff, the conversations will probably be out of your reach

Trigun
