Martial Arts on a more serious or "correct" tone
« on: July 12, 2013, 10:14:59 PM »
Well going through ani-db isn't proving all to easy to narrow down anime series/films that focus on real human ability with regards to martial arts...

What I'm looking for is preferably series that focus on people training and using martial arts but keep things in a real perspective. What I mean by that is I don't want to watch series that show "super power" or any kind of absurd fantasy.

The story doesn't have to be anything particular though, it could be a drama or comedy but I'd like to see something that shows both human strength and weakness.

The only thing though that I would say that I don't want to have a bearing on this is anything sport related, so Hajime no Ippo is ruled out.

The main reason I'm looking for something like this is partly due to my own training, so I'm curious to see if there has been a series made or not.

I recently watched the anime documentry on Musashi Miyamoto after reading The Book of Five Rings (quite interesting looking at a Japanese perspective of the man rather then the western translation done by Thomas Cleary and also noting on how wrong some of the Japanese understanding of Western culture is too heh).

I know this might be fairly difficult but I would appreciate any reasoning for any suggestions made please (rather then stating just an anime title).

To summarise I'm looking around these keywords: -

    • Martial Arts
    • Drama
    • Accurate
    • Human Strengths and Weaknesses

I don't think my watched list isn't really gonna be too helpful in since this is something rather specific I'm looking for rather then something akin to what I have watched but feel free to look anyway to see if there's anything I should watch anyway regardless of my request.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance :)

If your definition of martial arts includes traditional Japanese sword fighting techniques, check Tsukikage Ran. Its MC's fighting style is more or less realistic.
Another possible suggestions in the same line are Bamboo Blade and maybe Shigurui and Yawara.
Spear fighting techniques - Seirei no Moribito
Tonfa fighting techniques - Avenger

Generally speaking, your chances to find totally realistic portrayal of martial arts in anime are pretty low :(.

Aye I know what you mean, it's been fairly difficult so far looking around, I've seen a fair few sports based series but when you look at combat sports, there is no real fighting going on and people intentionally fight poorly or rather, inefficiently in order to score a point, I do imagine though that there would be some hidden gems about.

It does surprise me however that one of the biggest "exports" of Japanese culture doesn't have the same in Japanese anime.

I'll check out the suggestions Al anyway, Avenger sounds promising as I have been doing training with Tonfa - really fun and energetic weapons to use with so much utility too.

Airmaster

These ones go a bit into superpower:
History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi
Rurouni Kenshin
Samurai Champloo

IIRC, it's an understatement.

Shura no Toki may be worth a try. Here's a sample

Kaze no Yojimbo - It is mostly realistic.
Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto - It has magic, but its MC is not a mage.

Breaker - There is a ton of fantasy (basically super strength and that too only at the ending) but it depicts the martial arts and the pain of mastering it. Good read. Also it is small so you can probably finish it one go.

Breaker - New Waves is the continuation and you can read that if you like the first one.

I don't have anything against super powers or fantasy, I'm just wanting to watch something different that differs from the normal "squat down have a crap and become 10 times more powerful with a glowing radiance" but I'm not disregarding it completely.

After all the suggestions, I'm going to take a look at the following: -

    • Avenger - I like cyberpunk anyway
    • Shura no Toki - It's something that I wouldn't ordinarily watch with regards to the era it's set in, but I'll give it a go
    • Kaze no Yojimbo - This looks good, maybe my kind of anime
    • Seirei no Moribito - As with Shura no Toki but the synopsis makes it sound interesting so I'l give this a go too
    • Air Master - This one looks like it will be a distraction rather then engrossing to watch but I'll give it a go nonetheless

I'm not sure about Breaker, I'm not all that much of a big fan of manga, I prefer novels (I tend to enjoy reading into the story rather then just the short speech bubbles).

Well, thanks for the recommendations, these should keep me entertained for a while but if you think of any more, please do mention.

Thanks again, I'll post again after I've watched some and let you know what I thought.

Be warned though, production values are distractingly lacking at times. The story itself is good, as it's mostly a remake of Kurosawa's Yojimbo. Shura no Toki covers several periods, MC will face Mushashi Miyamoto, Yagyu Juubei, Okita Souji and Hijikata Toshizo among others.

I'd second Shigurui. I remember it being fairly realistic in the handling of the characters and actual battles, and quite high on the gore (if that's a turn-off). It starts with two skilled warriors about to battle each other in a tournament (one missing an arm and the other blind), and then flashes back to when they were young and able-bodied upstarts to show how they both got to that point and received their wounds. It follows their training days and fulfills your wish for drama and dealing with human strength and weakness.

Perhaps Samurai X? I'm not sure it's quite what you're after, but it might be worth a look for you.

    Baki The Grappler http://myanimelist.net/anime/287/Baki_the_Grappler

I think this meets the criteria, there's not really any super powers.

My opinion is to look after live action  drama (wuxia without fantasy - asiatorrents) or comics ( manga , manhwa or manhua)

    manga-jpn
    manhwa-kor
    manhua- HK/Chi

Shigurui would be even better if it didn't stop halfway through.

You should try out historical anime, such as Katanagatari, Miyamoto Musashi: Dream of the Last Samurai, Shura No Toki, etc, etc. All historical animes involve real-life people used to be reat warriors, sch as Miyamoto Musashi, the undefeated nito ryuu samurai. ;)

BTW, which anime is this video ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQTo4dlI1mU
    Born to like catgirls.
