Updating a adopt torrent
« on: July 17, 2013, 07:30:32 PM »
Hiya.
I thought for some time now and figured i would like to adopt a torrent (maybe a few more once i get the hang of this), for several reasons usually coming down to the torrents need updating (example soundtracks incomplete after years or never updated with later seasons with no other torrents around) but it also is a step forward in contributing to the community in my own small way (aside from seeding of course ^^).
Problem is i don't fully understand everything, now don't misunderstand, i understand adopting it essentially makes the torrent fall under your name and therefore you are to take care of it and all, but there are two big issues i don't fully understand:

1# When adopting a torrent how exactly do i modify it? As in add missing files and such, a lot of torrents i looked into when thinking of adopting are usually soundtracks which haven't been updated and usually missing lots of albums/singles and OST(s), which really would mean i would be updating many with the later missing releases, thing is i have no experience what so ever in torrents outside downloading and seeing them so i wouldn't know where to start. I actually imagine this might be in the wiki but i don't really know where to look for it as it is slightly different from most things im reading. So maybe a link or something could be handy here

2# The biggest concern i have is actually updating the whole torrent page on the site it's self, all are done with these fancy designs and such which of course all will need updating to add the new files (or tracklist) to. now i wouldn't have a clue where to start on all this stuff and thus is the main reason i never went through in the past with adopting the torrent. Normally i rely on the wiki to help me a little but sadly im looking at this sentence:
Quote
If you are a new user with no prior experience do not worry, we will sit you through the description-editing process and help you bring it up to speed, all you need is a willingness to learn and dedication to the adoption process.
sounds nice and all but i have no idea who would help me with what and blah blah you get the point (also i imagine a lot of these don't apply as some this stuff was wrote years back).
So really a point into a topic or further into the Wiki could be helpful here as well. (i will continue to spend my night searching the Wiki for more help here though as i guess i might be able to piece some bits together through this).

so in short:
1- link or something to somewhere which can be of help explaining simply how to edit/update torrents currently existing to bring them up to date.
2 -a little help in the html or whatever for updating torrent descriptions.
3- does it sound simpler to just make a new torrent and add that? o.o

(sorry i know it might be annoying to deal with torrent newbies but we all start somewhere :P)
Thank you :)

Well true, this is what i was looking at but it doesn't really explain what i was asking about editing the torrent (files and such)...

Edit:
would i just simply make a new offer?

If you're adding a ton of new files and are prepared to make a lot of changes to the torrent page, it's probably best and easiest to submit a new offer. If it's just a few things, create a new torrent file (follow the Wiki guidelines) and apply for a swap.

Where you draw that line is up to you. I don't think anyone will fault you for picking one over the other.

well it's over 1.2GB of files and as you can guess that's quite large for music files in most cases so i think i will look into making a new one and submit that, or at least give it a try :)
thanks for clearing that up Kira :)

A guideline I use is if you change over half of the contents of the torrent, you should be offering it a new. Alternatively, if it's an old torrent with few seeders, a swap would definitely kill it, so offer it a new.
