Can't Change Forum Picture

Hey guys, I'm really a newbie at this, but how do you change your forum picture? I'm not sure that I'm on the right page, but when I put in an image URL, it comes up with an error saying "The avatar you have selected is either too large or not an avatar."
This happens every time, even with 600x600 pics, and now I'm probably doing it wrong. Is "avatar" the same as "profile picture"?
