Thoughts about anime from those who know nothing about it.
MrIntruder:
Quite recently, I've been asking a fair few of my friends about what they think about anime, what they know of it and what they like/dislike about it.
For the most part a lot of people know very little, a lot of older folk (40+) tend to think anime is porn and dragonball/sailor moon like, slightly younger think anime is porn and tentacle rape (surprising that a distinction between porn and tentacle rape has been made) and typically my age group (so, mid twenties) know of anime in a wider capacity but have not actively watched any due to mostly, lack of ability to obtain any without the internet; anime or at least a large variety of anime isn't widely available unless you go to a very large city such as in my case, Leeds or Manchester. Teenagers and children however now seem to know a fair bit about anime since the more "cartoon action anime" types of series are fairly well published and aired on tv now.
So, after everything I've heard from the people I've asked, whether they joked or not and whether they watch anime or not, I decided to make a topic with a really crap story outline.
--- Quote ---One day a young man who wants to follow his dream sets off to explore the land as he perfects the training he received from his master about understanding certain ideas and teachings.
Along his travels he meets two women, beautiful women whom he befriends until later he realises after they say goodbye, they have stolen all his money so he wishes to seek justice, moments later he see the two women being raped by a huge tentacle monster that is, until he wakes up in the dungeon of a dirty tyrant whom the women were working for and used sleep gas to abduct him as it turned out, his teacher was the famed grand master of the last hyper dimension pursuit force.
After some random series of events that the young man explains to a friend who happens to also appear by way of using the phrase "due to certain circumstances", plot holes appear and tear through the universe requiring the formation of a new hyper dimension pursuit force that our man happens to have learned the skills necessary from his teacher to perform.
Friend dies, boy meets girl (at high school) who was a close childhood friend, evil is conquered by will power, THE END.
At somepoint during or after, there will be a filler/extra episode where everyone will go to a hot spring (separated by sex of course) where the men will try to peep through a tiny hole followed by tipping the wall over and subsequently the men will all suffer nosebleeds.
--- End quote ---
Sound about right?
Mimishiki19:
Wait,I don't get it.Is there another kind of porn besides tentacle rape? :o
I also don't get what this topic is about.
MrIntruder:
It's just a collection of statements from people I know put into a loose - collaboration.
To be honest I'm not sure what it is I want to discuss but I thought, make a topic and see what comes about.
Mistgun_Zero:
Basically, anyone who doesn't know anime will outright say it's for kids and will say they will not watch it/hate it, make fun of it etc. You have to force them to actually watch it. And after that there is a good 80-90% chance they will start watching anime even if they don't become hardcore anime fans. That's all I have to say. (Though some may even become closet otaku's. I know of one. He his one of my best friends)
Tatsujin:
My co-workers talks a lot of shit about Anime and keeps saying "Look at all these little girls. WTF is up with Japan?". I say this to him, "Culture. Get used to it."
He watched Fate/Zero up to like episode ... 16 or 17 then lost interest because he "doesn't enjoy all the talking". He's a big US comic person and I'm a major anti-US comic person - it's very stupid and self-centered around stupid characters, with the exception of Batman. I like Batman's story. So now I'm introducing him to few non-loli-girl-type-anime and he's interested in few. I wonder if he would like Mirai Nikki, Deadman Wonderland, Death Note and most recent one - Attack on Titan. I'm thinking of starting him off with one of those four series. Others in the US aren't very interested, and I met some librarian that she was interested in Anime and was surprised how vast the young generation is addicted to it.
Anime in Chicago is much appealing to people than long ago thanks to the Internet, or better yet Fansubbers. She doesn't know much about Anime and have seen few. She is interested. I've asked her few questions and figured "this girl is a freaking nub" and she wants to host an Anime ... meeting or something, in August. I've yet to go to the library again but we will see. She's planning on expanding a section dedicated to Anime since the community is so involved.
I also remember, back in 2004 in college, some chubby female went ahead and made an Anime club and freaking 20+ people joined in less than a week. That's the first time or probably the second time I saw World of Warcraft and that's what drove an addiction inside of me towards the game. But we watched shows (don't even recall what shows we saw) and there was a lot of talk. There were people who, in that very club room, didn't even know what the hell Anime is but they knew it was Japanese Cartoons and they were interested. I remember our Adviser - a hot adviser to say with a skirt that rolled above her knees - was sitting down, writing notes, and wasn't really involved in anything till like the second day. Ah ... I attended few more times then dropped. I think my Japanese friend attended the club room, but I don't remember if we went together or not. I was the one to invite him.
All other co-workers and family members only get interested in the cool awesome stuff, non-ecchi, non-bloody. I say this. Watch Ore no Imouto, School Days, Mirai Nikki, fucking ... Death Note, what other good shows are out there? Ah yea, Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night UBW ... I don't know. Just throw in a bunch of this and that and see what they say. Give them a mix of "everything".
The only person I speak to about anime is my young sister. She watches shows as soon as they finish and talks to me about them for few minutes.
Those US conventions or whatever Western Conventions they do make me sick. Even the ones in Japan. I get hyped about Anime, but ... outside of that ... I cannot see myself doing much about it. Meeting creators, on the other hand, is pretty cool. Knowing that P.A.Works producers and even Huke whom came to the western world spiked my interest in going there just to meet these people. Well, that's about it.
