Oh, man. Wolf's Rain. Every time I hear the ending theme it still makes me misty.

I'll add:
-Grave of the Fireflies
-Trigun
-Princess Tutu
-Revolutionary Girl Utena
-Bokurano
-Sailor Moon: Sailor StarS

Wow, seriously? Someone who watched Madoka is asking why it's considered sad? Did you forget to turn on your brain while watching? I didn't think anyone would assess it as a simple Mahou Shoujo anime.

I don't think (s)he said (s)he had watched it, rather asked if it was similar to for example CCS.

I dunno if Grave of the Fireflies was sad or not. I had the unfortunate fate of watching it on a stream with a bunch of people talking and laughing the entire time so I was just kinda like "meh" through the whole deal.

Overall I never really felt a connection to the characters anyhow, so it wasn't all that sad. It was a sad story and all, but there's just not anything that makes you feel like you should care.

-Grave of the Fireflies

[/b]

I have said it before. but I'll say it again; no anime or movie have managed to make me cry like this.
I was miserable for days after watching it.
It might have something to do with the fact that I have kids, but it is so hearbreaking..
I'll never watch it again, but I am glad now that I managed to finish it.
The problem with the world is that the intelligent  people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence.

Same here. Bought the Hotaru no Haka DVD, and it is totally amazing, but I don't think I will ever be able to watch it again, too much despair.

Be careful about genres - don't trust them too much...

Do be careful about genres! Some of the recommendations here are very much sad in only a childlike way (Now and Then, Here or There, Saikano).

Some are comedies 90% of the time and then have a sad 10% thrown in (Cowboy Bebop, Sailor Moon S), which I don't count as being a sad anime at all - but you might.

Some take a few episodes to get started: Steins Gate or Haibane Renmei. Anyway, echoing: Grave of The Fireflies, Wolf's Rain, Gilgamesh.

Fate/Zero
Serial Experiments Lain
Full Moon Wo Sagashite
Boogiepop Phantom

Since when genocide and using children as soldiers or comfort women for the army are sad only in a childlike way?

Agreed. -And I didn't say Sailor Moon S (which has a couple sad moments but is not heartbreaking at all). I said Sailor Moon StarS, which is. Madoka wasn't the first mahou shoujo to do that hook. :P

Exactly. It's one of the those relate to type animes so if you don't have any younger siblings then it might not really resonate within you.

My mistake with Sailor Moon. But Now and Then, Here or There is -  very kiddy on the front end. What those episodes showed are character interactions not far off from Disney fare, or Saturday morning cartoons with what happened to be a Sad Thing in the form of comfort women. Mostly it's a swashbuckling adventure.

The Last Love Song has a sad backdrop, but it's primarily a comedy of circumstance concerning the relationship between a man who is clearly in his 40's and a robot girl who is clearly a preteen, and how they negotiate their feelings through the Things That Happen. The child soldier issue, as presented here, is superficial; it might be sad to youngsters, but not to adults. If we're talking child soldiers, best to go Gunslinger Girl. Saikano does better under a "wistful" tag.

ok, about the MANGA, just finished Pajama na Kanojo (still crying/weeping), need more recommendation (better if romance-related since there would be breakup, breakdown, triangle love, etc)...

and, it would be nice if the MANGA drawing is newer-style that easy on eyes (not old-style drawing)...something like;
TWGOK
Pajama na Kanojo
Nisekoi

atm, still googling too~

thanks

Kemono no Souja Erin and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 are heartbreaking, and superb anime as well.

Im amazed that there's a lot title that i never known...
And why nana? I saw that name in other thread (many of them)...

You'll get an extremely deep connection to the characters and feel all of their ups and downs... really hard. When they're super happy you'll be super happy with them but when they're bawling their eyes out... you're going to be bawling your eyes out right along with them. It's a freakin' masterpiece.

I wish someone had said that to me before I started watching it so I could prepare myself... Towards the end, I felt so sad that I barely could go to work :( I really hope the story gets a true ending though, since that is the saddest part about NANA. (Hope the author recovers and gets back to the story asap!)
