Best Software To Rip/Encode DVDs?
« on: August 06, 2013, 01:20:13 AM »
Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I wasn't sure if I should post it here or in the technology area...
-The 'latest' same thread I found was from 2012 and I'm pretty sure things have changed since then.

But I was wondering what do ya'll think is the best software to rip/encode DVDs into AVI and/or MKV format.

I'm looking for more of a 'general guide', if possible for dummies, with nothing fancy.

I'm just looking to drop the files as they were on said DVDs, not fix them up (unless there's premade scripts that are fairly easy to follow/install.

Thanks to any replies.

Handbrake is among the best, if not the best, "for dummies" software for that. I don't think AVI is supported, but I believe you can use MKV or MP4. Shouldn't need a guide because it's very straightforward.

Use MakeMKV to rip DVD into mkv.

For rookie, Handbrake is an easy front-end GUI for encoding. However, once you get to know video encoding better, you want to use other GUI instead.

Try Vidcoder as well. Easy to configure and has video filters & presets
