Armitage III (not a mech genre but it's got a couple giant robot fighting scenes so it's pretty close)

Blue Submarine No. 6 (Not really a mecha but has a few fight scenes)
FLCL (Few fight scenes as well)
Full Metal Panic
Macross Series

Evangelion for sure, but not only because of the Mecha, because of the message.

I'm hopelessly in love with Macross, every time I think about it my eyes fill with tears, it's such a strong anime, the greatest weapon is music.

I've also warmed up to Sousei no Aquarion and Aquarion EVOL. I just find the battle sequences to be excellent and the characters endearing.

Oh, and TTGL is just fun.

Mobile suits. Giant fighting robots have always been a thing but actually being able to pilot one. Can you tell me what other series or franchise has been as successful portraying this and not the macross/robotech stuff which started in 82 as opposed to the gundams which started in 79!

Piloted robots weren't new in 79 either.  Is Gundam the longest running most commercially successful mecha franchise?  Sure.

Your statement made it sound like Gundam is the source of all mecha which is far from correct.  MSG does seem to be the start of the Real Robot genre.

What's mecha anime? Robots? Are androids and cyborgs also included in that category? Or what about mobile suits that can be piloted but have an AI operating system like a mobile doll? You sound biased towards gundams. Did one of them ruin your home country through war?
