Mobile suits. Giant fighting robots have always been a thing but actually being able to pilot one. Can you tell me what other series or franchise has been as successful portraying this and not the macross/robotech stuff which started in 82 as opposed to the gundams which started in 79!  :police:

Piloted robots weren't new in 79 either.  Is Gundam the longest running most commercially successful mecha franchise?  Sure.

Your statement made it sound like Gundam is the source of all mecha which is far from correct.  MSG does seem to be the start of the Real Robot genre.
