Looking for a serious anime.
« on: August 16, 2013, 11:26:40 AM »
  • Heavily prefer seinen.
  • Would also prefer drama/tragedy
  • No ecchi or pantsu or any of that other shit please. Nudity is fine, as long as it doesn't turn into a hentai.
  • Serious story/message(s)
  • Can be historical, futuristic, sci-fi, fantasy or whatever.

Some examples of what I'm looking for:

GitS
Mononoke
Mardock Scramble
Shinsekai Yori
Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica
Psycho Pass
Monster
Casshern Sins
Ergo Proxy

Things that are already on my to do list:

Texhnolyze
Now and Then, Here and There
Legend of Galactic Heroes
Neon Genesis Evangelion

Sweet! Thanks. Going by the synopsis on some of these, they are solid suggestions.

Looking forward to watching Mouryou no Hako and Gilgamesh especially (out of the suggestions I've read so far)

These are all seinens you should appreciate considering your list/rates, the criterias and examples you provided:

- Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World (Mushishi like)
- Pale cocoon (Short sci-fi movie, not big but still good to see)
- Hotarubi no Mori e (Another short movie, with a deep message, one of my favorite)
- Paprika (Movie again, focusing on the conflict between dreams and reality)
- NHK ni Youkoso! (Really good drama about depression and agoraphobia)

Hope i helped ;)
My list - Truth is a double-edged sword, with no handle.

+1 for Scrapped Princess, Hell Girl and Baccano (although Baccano relies heavily on comedy)

Damn Al, you pretty much wiped out everything with that list :P

Let's start off with +1's:
GTO - This has levels of drama and pure emotion that's typically reserved for tragedies. And yes, it's a comedy series.
Ga-Rei Zero - I agree that you need to watch at least the first 3 episodes to understand what's going on.
Infinite Ryvius - Lord of the Flies in space!

Gonna -1 Baccano though. If you like character development and a cohesive story, don't watch this. Has the worst static 2D characters you'll ever see. Horribly stereotypical and completely over-the-top.

Now for my short list.
RahXephon - The music-inspired version of Evangelion. And to me, far superior to it.
Mawaru Penguindrum - Dark, quirky, often hilarious but always serious. (This is one series where you will have to essentially "rewind" and watch certain scenes twice. Once to see what the penguins are up to... and then again to pay attention to the more serious dialogue and story that's going on in the background)
Le Chavalier D'Eon - Honestly, I don't remember much about this series... just that it ended up pretty dark and pretty damn good!
Blue Gender - A mech series that is very much a hit-or-miss. Completely devoid of comedy. Filled with death and bloodshed, but at its core is a very solid romance. Characters have a ton of development, with very understandable reactions with regards to their environment.

For many years it occupies the top line of anime chart in Russia with the score 9.24/10.
