Even one extra time during 5 years? Hell, I install more often than that due to HD upgrades.

I have a lot of really intricate to configure programs...
Can't you save the setting and then import them?
O_o

I have a bulk rename program that I've got like 10 different settings saved, for different file types, that I import each time.

Hah! I wish. Something like Photoshop, yeah, sure. But sadly not everything's that well supported. A lot of stuff is really archaic and stupid, with an extra dash of retarded on top.

...and I take it they're the best kind of programs for what you're doing, yeah?

My only issue when reinstalling an OS is making sure I back-up all my PC game saves.

I wish I could find some kind of 'manager' for them, so they'd be easy to move.

I'd be happy if developers could just stick to one standard for where saves are kept in the first place.

no more like i wish they made their game installation portable, so it can be transferred to another PC.
for games that needed a key, they'll just have to input the key again to reactivate the game.

I don't know, I just copy the entire C:\Users folder and that alone saves me a lot of trouble. Lots of program and game settings are saved there.

a lot of games still uses sub directories within their own game folder though, specially old games.

Not on Windows Vista or later they don't though, unless they require you to run them as administrator. Or, in other words, UAC popups every time you launch them. There aren't many applications like that, so backing their data up individually in addition to using the Windows easy file transfer tool is pretty straightforward. I still have all my save games, work, settings, and other data from 2009 when I first built my desktop, and I'm not even using the same computer any more.

I just backup the data folders individually.

This became a routine after installing Windows: the first thing I do is type UAC in search bar, go to user account control settings and effectively disable uac. Thus I get the popup message only once to confirm change to UAC settings.  :D

After all UAC is there only to insult my intelligence, not unlike the Metro UI in Win8.

New HDD for new OS, then slowly sift through what I needed and purge the rest.

Maybe it's just because I'd spent plenty of time using Linux before Vista came along and so as well as understanding the (very good) security benefits, I'm used to having to elevate applications that need administrator privileges, but I really don't understand the UAC hate. It's hardly a huge inconvenience, and it's honestly something Windows should have had years ago, like every other decent OS.

Just allowing any old applications to run with full administrator privileges and do whatever they want without any kind of oversight, as previous versions did, is a ridiculous security risk. UAC effectively guarantees that malware can't damage your computer without you expressly giving it permission first, which is well worth the occasional extra click, IMO.

UAC is a bit too pervasive though.

I'd rather chance it to be honest. UAC is annoying as shit.

The best way to prevent malware is not downloading it in the first place.

I disable UAC while setting up the machine, but once I done. I just bring it back up. It doesn't bother me too much if I don't have to deal with some tens of times a week.
