When building... Do you buy Windows?
« on: August 17, 2013, 12:11:36 AM »
I thought it'd be an interesting poll to see the results of. You don't have to comment with your answer if you don't want to. I just figure with the ~$100-200 price tag a lot of people probably opt to not pay that much and simply pirate Windows instead to save a bit of money or maybe spend it on something else like a better CPU or GPU.

I buy. I used to pirate Windows 7, but eh. If I wanted to cheap out on the OS, I would try a Linux solution rather than deal with cracks and shit. Plus you can pick Windows 8 up for about $90 at Amazon.

Third vote, I purchase a legal copy when they don't fuck up. Windows XP Pro and Vista (both 32/64-bit). After Vista, I got pissed off and got Windows 7 and 8 because of how shitty Vista is compared to them. Fuck you, Microsoft. Make a real OS that's worth my money next time, like 7.

Ah ... that felt good to get it off my chest.

Correction - I purchased XP Pro and Vista, is what I meant.

It's not buying when it's free; it's not pirating when it's legal.

Got some copies from my college distribution stuff. Gave one to a friend (or two, don't remember). I don't think I've ever purchased it, though.

Cute, huh?

Sooo, only options are I buy it and I pirate it because there's no such thing as a free operating system?

It's only for Windows users, obviously. It'd be pretty stupid to ask Linux users considering we already know they don't buy their OS.

...they could purchase Redhat support and the like.

But yeah, I don't pirate nor buy it, since I got mine through MSDNAA.

Buying a pre-built computer isn't the same thing as building. :P

Even when I build my PC, I tend to get the OS for free/insanely cheap.

Newegg, and even local computer shops, be fucking MAGIC when it comes to sales and 'buy x amount, get something free/dirt cheap'.

Out of curiosity what kind of computer do you have, And what kind do you buy? i.e. Gaming computers from like xotic pc or Origin, etc.  Or is just standard stuff from dell, lenovo, etc. ?

My laptop is, obviously, a pre-built, but my old desktop I built myself.

I don't buy pre-built gaming PCs, and I actively tell people not to do so.
It's an INSANE waste of money.

Some people have the money and don't want to build it or just can't and don't want to learn so there is obviously a market for it. Plus if some one was starting out there a hell of a lot easier to upgrade then some shitty as gateway or dell.  :P

Pick your parts and pay for assembly/testing. Much less expensive.

^ i have horror stories to tell about their technical service when it comes to assembling the PC :P

which is why i'd rather trust my self to assemble the PC than trust some people who'd drop a harddisk and say oops.
