Here are a few close matches I think:

Hellsing (click to show/hide)Seras Victoria fits this pattern, though she doesn't reach it by the end of either the manga or the anime. This is assuming of course that she survives long enough to acquire the level of power held by Alucard. (The manga is by far the better of the two.)
Trigun (click to show/hide)At the beginning Vash is portrayed as a bumbling goof, but as the series progresses it is slowly revealed that he really is worthy of his various titles and the $$60 billion bounty on his head. He's also not (at all) human.
Ichiban Ushiro no Daimaou (click to show/hide)God isn't an abstract concept in this anime. It actually exists. The main character ends up opposing it.
