Macross's Many, Many TV Series

Is there any particular plot order in which to watch the many, many Macross animes?  Is SDF Macross the best place to start?

Be careful which version of SDF Macross you get if you intend to watch the English dub. There's one really really bad version like with random people off the street cast to do voices and it's very obvious.

Most people tend to think Macross Zero and Macross 7 aren't very good so most suggest just to go straight to SDF Macross but you can judge for yourself I guess.

This may apply to the Macross 7, but I've never heard a bad reviews about the Macross Zero.

Usually not advised to watch Zero before SDF, so not to spoil the experience of the old series.
