High Profile format.
« on: September 11, 2013, 01:36:47 AM »
Hi guys, i have a Sony BDP S480 bdplayer. i recently downloaded Howl's moving Castle, and it's Profile format level is High@L4.0, which my bdplayer cannot play smoothly (stutters) and Grave of the Fireflies which is High@L5.1 that just can't play.
But to my surprised Kiki's Delivery service is High@L4.1 it plays smoothly! I don't know what went right, but i am really confused.
Do you guys know what happened?
I did not do any update of firmware for the Bdplayer.
 Thanks in advance! :)

Most likely because the 5.1 video was 10-bit, hence your player will not play it as it uses hardware decoding, and there is no hardware decoding of 10-bit video.

So you mean to say even though kiki's Format profile is High@L4.1 it is encoded below 10-bit? I use Handbrake for encoding, and later onto VidCoder as i can choose the level of profile for the encode. I will look into it.
Thank u Motok11 ^_^

ref-frames is also important, whatever or not hardware acceleration can kick in, if the 4.1 had a lower ref-frames than 9 if I remember correctly, the video would let BD player use hardware acceleration.

Thanks mrdkreka. According to mediainfo Kiki's have "Format settings, Reframes=16 frames". I'm currently re-encoding Kiki's with 3 (default) reference frames and also 3 for maximum b-frames, although i don't know what those are for. But the format level is High@L4.1 and after this i'll go for High@L3.2 just to be sure what my bdplayer can play.
