Handicapped characters
« on: September 14, 2013, 11:00:52 PM »
I just read "Sarashi Ai" by ShindoL and really enjoyed the chapter "Barrier Free."  (http://bakabt.me/173491-sarashi-ai.html)

I'm handicapped myself and confined to a wheelchair, reading this was kind of nice since I've never seen any manga - hentai or non-hentai - with handicapped characters.

It's funny because I have a similar disease to the gal in this chapter. It's called Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Basically I was in a car accident and I tore my MCL in my knee. The injury healed but my nervous system believes the MCL to be permanently injured causing an unbelievable amount of pain.

What's worse, is since it's a nervous system disease, it's spread to my stomach causing me to puke at least 3-4 times every day in addition to the same severe pain I experience.

If you want to learn s'more about CRPS, check out the wiki: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complex_regional_pain_syndrome

So, if anybody has any other manga with handicapped characters, I would be really appreciative if you could link me so I can download them!

Thanks a ton :)

Not a manga, but Katawa Shoujo is a visual novel that deals with a variety of disabilities affecting all the major characters. It's got sexual content enabled by default but it can be turned off if you'd rather not see it.

The MC of Real Dive is confined to a wheelchair for most of the series.
Two MC's of Shigurui are handicapped.
There are several handicapped characters in Basilisk.
Ayame Jinguuji from Ga-Rei: Zero is confined to a wheelchair for the whole series, and Yomi is also crippled near the end of the series.
Shiki from Kara no Kyoukai loses one of her hands in the second half of the story, and has to use an artificial limb.
The MC of Nitaboh is blind.
Nana and Mariko from Elfen Lied.
Gerd from Blassreiter.
Several characters in Midori.
Iceman from Basquash!.
Celty from Durarara!!, if you want a more humorous example.

I'd recommend the VN Katawa Shoujo as well.
There's a girl in a wheelchair in Guilty Crown though she's a supporting character.

If you want a non-anime TV series, try Dark Angel if you haven't already seen it. I think you'd really enjoy it. One of the best TV series ever made.

Yes it is, and the game is free as the site shows :)

They don't even accept donations.

Edit: They have a blog here.

It wasn't made by a company. A bunch of people from some message board like 4chan came together and made it over a few years so they gave it to everyone for free.

There's Gotou ni Naritai.

I haven't read it, but there's Can't See Can't Hear But Love.

Hohzuki Island has the MC and his blind little sister trapped on a terrible island. It's a horror manga, if you're not into that.

X has Hinoto as a fairly prominent secondary character.

Code Geass has Nunnally.

Basquash also has Coco, the sister of the MC. The MC is motivated to play Basquash in order to win enough money to give Coco the surgery that might repair the damage done to her legs in an accident leaving her wheelchair-bound.
