How To Encode Videos?
« on: September 17, 2013, 12:23:30 AM »
I have an anime I wanted to change from DVD to .mkv, but when I do it, I get yellow subs, and the video has these slight lines when the characters move from time to time, but the videos I see here, they all have white subs and good video encoding.  I was wondering if anyone could be so kind as to enlighten me as to how to do it, so the format looks the same as the videos on this website?  Thank you!

What you're talking about is called interlacing and it's not so simple that an easy answer could be offered up.

Read everything in this thread and hopefully it'll set you on the right path: http://forums.bakabt.me/index.php?topic=36689.5

It would, to be honest, be far easier to just download some already encoded.

If you are willing to re-encode the anime you have download, you should try to analyze first what kind of audio/video codec your standalone player supports and the audio bitrate as this will affect the quality of your encode. Download Mediainfo. Highlight any video you choose and right-click and you will see the right-context menu for MediaInfo (that's if you installed klite codec pack), click it and a dialog window appear, you will see all the useful information about the file.

And for the interlacing, i use Handbrake, there is an option there to "De-interlace".
Yes i agree with Tiffanys.

Oh, ok. I've downloaded Kotetsu before, but if i'm not mistaken it's not interlaced, it's from your release also.

I'm just gonna copy/paste this from another website. It's minimalistic, but it should at least help clarify a couple of things.

" Now follow the steps shown in the rest of the DVD section "

Is there a link to the rest of the tutorial?

If you look closely, the section you are referring is split into two types. I admit, it's ordered wrong, but the 'rest of the DVD section' shuld actually say to follow the rest of the steps as they are for the bluray, as in, once you have demuxed the files as shown in method 1 (slightly obsfucated, but it works), you have this line: Follow the BD process for the rest, remember to drop the colorprim etc as DVD is only SD.

I admit, this line should actually be separate, and at the very bottom of the guide.

I'm thinking of rewriting it because mostly, though not incorrect, there are better practises available.

What you wanna do is basically the same as for the bluray (well, to put it simply anyway) just the opening of the files for preparing to encode them is different.

I'll see if I have time this weekend to properly correct everything (as an edit is required elsewhere also), but I am incredibly busy this weekend, what with several personal projects I am working on myself as well as 3 other people to give tasks, all of whom I must instruct exactly what to do :(

OK - I see. Thanks.

I'm still playing with Dot-Crawl filters trying to get the settings just right, then I'll move on to making an attempt at starting from scratch and doing the the whole video with AviSynth. I'm gona try to get a snipit of the video uploaded somewhere and maybe get some pointers too.

Thanks again,

mugz

PS - Ok, when I'm using DVD Decrypter and I select only the PGC I want, I get one cell with 7 chapters that are the main video, I unchecked everthing else, but instead of getting one big vob vile I'm getting a vob for each chapter.

Solution:
The tutorial is missing a step - if you right-click on the PGC you select, there are a number of options for how you want the results split  - if you select the 4gb file size - you get one big file (assuming your main video is less that 4gb of course).

To disable file splitting by default, you can go to Tools > Settings > IFO Mode > File Splitting and select None in the drop-down.

You make a good point, when I wrote the guide, it was on a brand new computer, using brand new installations of the programs, I did not change any settings, however, I did not assume what would happen if someone else's settings were a little different.
When I do eventually correct the guide, add links to the programs and update the overall process, I'll definitely consider adding required settings. Sorry about that :P

Also, avisynth and avspmod have had a few developments since this was written and I think some steps need rewriting to reflect better uses of the programs.
Do remember, I'm just slightly above amateur myself, only having been using AviSynth for a bit over a year and a half.
