Despair!
« on: September 20, 2013, 05:57:12 AM »
As the title says, I'm looking for things filled with despair. Manga is preferred, but anime is also fine.

Something like Hitsuji no Uta is what I'm after. Something with nothing but despair. Maybe a glimmer of hope at the end, but nothing more than that.

Please refer to my manga list here. Feel free to recommend something even if it's on the "plan to read" section. With such a huge list, I always have a hard time picking one from it to start up next.

- Bokura no. Either manga or anime. Watched the first few episodes, saw it was all downhill from there.
- Shigurui. Also in both anime and manga forms. Only seen the anime, which isn't the complete story. Fairly sure a happy ending is out of the question.
- Uzumaki. One of the few horror manga I've read. Already on your planned list, so give it a shot. There's also a live action version but I can't tell you how that is.

- Bokura no - Shigurui - Uzumaki

I loved Bokurano, but was avoiding the manga after I heard the ending was very different from the anime. I'll still give it a shot though. The other two move to the top of my list to read. Thanks.

Eureka 7... despair? The anime had a pretty damn happy ending. This has me intrigued. Devilman, Nausicaa added to the list. I can't find anything about Windaria or Not Simple atm. The other's I've seen. Thanks.

I recommended manga, not anime. Its ending is drastically different.

Yes, I assumed that :P I'll definitely read it then. Windaria and Not Simple look interesting enough, both have been added as well.

And check Vampire Princess Miyu TV. Its protagonists survive, but the ending is definitely NOT happy.

Same author as Narutaru, that might also fit. Not sure how it ends but not guessing it's happy.

Indeed it is. Narutaru was fabulous. And Vampire Princess Miyu... I've had that series on my external for years and never got around to watching it. If the ending is anything like that of one of my favorite series, I'll be watching it soon!

So much to watch/read, so little time *sigh*

First half of the first episode of Kotoura-san. The rest is just light comedy but that first part is something you should definitively watch.
Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

Monster is pretty dark, got loads of despair and is simply a masterpiece.
I've watched only anime, but there is manga aswell (people say that it's even better than anime).

The Monster anime is incredibly faithful to the manga. You don't really lose out on anything by seeing it versus reading it.

Berserk?

I mean, it only ever get 'happy' when the author is getting ready to make it so very unhappy.

Why has nobody mentioned Zetsubou Sensei yet?
Seinen and Slice of Life cannot describe the same title, because daily life is too boring to be called a plot. Ecchi/fanservice is not plot either.

It's not really that depressing, alternatives considered.

Realizing that life is shit and he wants nothing to do with, while simultaneously being stalked by at least 3 mild-to-strongly psychotic, stalkerish type female students of his, and constantly being "corrected" by a blissfully unaware optimist. His home is constantly invaded, he's always put in compromising positions that'd likely land him in jail, and his parents either have a wicked sense of humor when it comes to naming their kids, or are just plain mean.

It's also done as humor. Not really meant to be depressing.

Gungrave?
Skip the first episode, and watch it before episode 18.

Yes, I watched the first couple of episodes then gave up on it. That first part was one of the most depressing things I've ever seen.

Why has nobody mentioned Zetsubou Sensei yet?

Probably because it's the exact opposite of what I requested.

And Gungrave added to the list. Thanks guys. This will last me for a while.
