SFV file creation
« on: September 22, 2013, 08:38:56 PM »
On one of my uploads I was asked to make a SFV file. Could some one ether tell me how to make one or give me a link to something about it. I tried looking on the wiki but no luck. I've already tried QuickSFV but I don't get the option to make one when I right click. passably am I doing something wrong?

I presume one of those will help?

If you don't have the contextual menu I can only assume you need to restart your computer or something so your shell can be modified.

Searching for "sfv context menu" gave me HashCheck Shell Extension. I don't know if it's good, though.

Edit: or just reboot like tifferz said.

I don't know, I've never made one. But why would someone here even want you to make an sfv file? I've never heard of such ridiculousness...

When a file doesn't have a CRC, it's appreciated when the uploader creates an .sfv file.

No it doesn't. You can create a SFV for any file and for any amount of files too, for that matter. A single SFV can be for an entire series.

Use it all the time: it's good.

HashCheck works with other hashes too.

I only need other hashes for AniDB atm, and their tool already covers that :P

I meant other checksum types.
I thought all checksums were hashes (but not the other way).
...I'm not completely sure, I need to read up.

Edit: Although, that would make your distinction valid in this case.

I recommend RapidCRC.

How to:
Select files
Right-click / send to / RapidCRC
Press one of the Action buttons on the right

Looks like this:

He means stuff like SHA-1, MD5, not just CRC32. For example: http://puu.sh/4yfEw.png

Ah, yeah, that I understood. I know CRC is typically referred to as a checksum, and SHA, Tiger, etc are referred to as hashes. I just haven't read up yet what the exact differences between them are (how they are made).
I only know at the moment that checksums should be quick to make and recognize small differences in files, while hashes should have a low collision rate.

Nah not really. It's more of a case that in the fansub scene, the term checksum defaults to CRC32 because it's the most commonly used. Checksum and hash sum are actually synonymous and the term hash just means a some values that are produced by a hash function.

Thanks :)
