TIPS for ratio
« on: October 17, 2013, 08:51:56 PM »
So Ive been a member for a long time, and in the early days when the community wasn't so big it was easy to maintain my upload ratio to 1 to 1 or even 1 to 2. But now that there are so many members Ive noticed a steady decline in my ratios. While its great we have such a large, generous community I am worried about falling under .5

So I'm asking for tips to help improve. My biggest problem is that when I get to a torrent, usually over 500 people have already finished downloading it, and half that are seeding. While this makes it great to leech, it's difficult to seed. So I'm asking how do I get to a torrent before the masses? Ive checked the offered link, and skimmed over the faq, but there is no info there about when torrents get approved. Is it always the same time same day? If so, can anyone tell me? Not sure if this matters, but Im a power user, but not an uploader.

Any help or advice would be appreciated, I'd like to be a better member of our community.

Just don't delete the BakaBT torrents you've downloaded after they finish DLing, then leave your BitTorrent client on to seed whenever it won't be inconvenient. I used to just turn them on when I went to sleep and then off again when I woke up. After not too long I hit a 2/1 ratio, then within a year after that I had a 5+/1 ratio and realized I would have to download around 4000 GB to even get back down below 1/1. I only torrent for a few days after downloading at this point, and really only do that to help out, as it would be decades before I could eat through the buffer I already have anyway.

If for some reason this won't work for you, you could always just log out to download things once you've found what you're looking for. This is a public tracker after all, no need to even have an account to torrent anything. =D

Although it does not prevent you from seeding torrents in anonymous mode either.

Power users and higher can access newly added torrents 24 hours before they are made available to regular users and the general public. If you want to grab brand new torrents early, feel free to visit the Browse page and refresh a few times a day. You can also add an RSS feed to get notified of new torrents immediately, and some clients support adding torrents via RSS so you could actually start downloading a new torrent as soon as it's added. Only problem is you can't filter, so you'd be downloading every new thing that comes in.

And yeah, generally seed stuff forever. Leave a box on 24/7 that just seeds BakaBT torrents, and seed at least 50 torrents at a time. The more torrents you seed, the more able you will be to maintain a high upload rate.

I do leave up my last ten torrents, perhaps I just dont leave my client on for long enough. I'll try just leaving it on when Im out of the house.

No, I want to be a contributing member of this community. Ive watched it grow into what it is now, and am glad that I always made it a point to seed before. I wouldn't feel right just leeching.
Thanks for the advice everyone, I think things will work out regardless. I'm not in any real danger of falling under the cap, I just miss seeing my ratio above one.

1. You are putting my quotes in Al_Sleeper's mouth somehow.

2. That small amount of torrents may be part of the problem. You want as many as possible up, because it will automatically prioritize the ones you're most needed on at any given moment, thus causing you to seed more. At least mine seems to do that anyways? Also sticking to the last 10 torrents limits it to mostly new releases, which means there will be tons of seeders on those torrents. If you keep older torrents on there, you will be heavily used as a peer more often when people download them, as there will be way less seeders to draw from.

3. You can contribute even if you do sign off to download something that would be a huge hit to your ratio occasionally, just be sure to seed it until it is 1/1, then you have given back 100% of what you leeched on it while off your profile. =]

Any tips available for those who want to seed but at the same time have crappy upload/download speeds such as 2mbps or less?

No, leave everything going forever. Just ten torrents will not get you many leechers.

I hope you realize that you'd be contributing more as an anonymous leecher who gives seeders someone to seed to rather than as just another seeder sitting around waiting for someone to seed to. BakaBT is unique because it's heavily overseeded. Seeders coming in don't contribute - they make the situation worse.

Wow, you get that much? I'm forced to throttle my up speed to 15KBps, or 120Kbps because my ISP keeps bugging me about going over the monthly bandwidth limit. Hopefully I can upgrade so they'll bug me less often about it.

Sad to say, in my part of the UK, Sky Fibre hasn't reached where I live yet and even then, it probably won't be for another year or two due to my area not having fibre installed until next year or a year later at the latest.

Even then, it probably won't be 100Mbps or more thanks to the UK Government not giving a fuck about investing in high-speed broadband!

On another note, the best thing is that Sky Broadband is a lot cheaper than BT and you get truly unlimited broadband from them.

BakaBT is unique because it's heavily overseeded. Seeders coming in don't contribute - they make the situation worse.

And that is your sole opinion, not a fact. Why don't we all just stop seeding and become greedy leechers, heck that would make the situation bloody awesome.
The fact of the matter is that seeding on BakaBT is really not _that_ hard despite the overseeded torrents issue. Honestly, no private tracker can be seeded on as easily as you can on BakaBT without even cheating yourself by being a public leech and then seeding back. So please stop telling people to be one!

Bottom line is 3 options already mentioned:
1) Be an annonymous leech if you can't be bothered by seeding at all
2) Annonymously leech, but seed back what you've leeched anonymously as well as Zel47 explained
3) Just seed as much as you can. There are plenty of freeleech options available that will not impact your ratio - and just seed as much as you can. Not just a set number, seed everything that you have on your hdd for as long as possible.

The only tip for best results there is - seed anywhere from 30-1000 torrents at a time (50 or so is actually quite sufficient), and your ratio will steadily increase.
Seed all hentai that you can, they tend have a better stream of leechers. And lastly, patience.
