Too old for anime?
« on: December 08, 2013, 12:22:43 PM »
So sometimes I go through a phase where like i get addicted to anime for a few months, this time it's mainly been hentai and manga. I am just wondering, I've hit 24 years of age and I think wow I need a life, like am I seriously too old for this stuff?

By nature I am spend alot of time bymelf, people call me anti social and a recluse, but those people are family members that I cant really stand, like I cant stand alot of people, if I see something in someones personality I don't like I will just delete them. I've also moved around quite alot of the years different houses and cities, so I've never had steady friends, it eventally just turned me into a loner, and I've anime as a substitiue, but now I am 24 and I think that I feel I need to get a life.

Do any of you have similar experiences?

As far as I am concerned age doesn't really matter in case I anime. I am 21 and I don't think I will be ever dropping anime. Like the same way I won't stop liking gaming or drawing for fun. Thigh no matter how much anime you have, it is important to have human interaction. You don't have to be a party boy, but being around people every now and then With a smile rather than a frown is the better.

People have been telling me to grow up since I was 10.
I've continued to defy them all these years.

Totally not buying one more sports car...right?  ;D

Because we can!

It's not about age. I hit a block on watching anime too but you can just get burnt out and it's hard to get back into it. It's not exclusive to anime though, it happens with just about anything.

Anime is a medium. Some of it is too fucking stupid for adults, some isn't. That's all there is too it.

Having said that, nothing wrong with being childish.

55 and keep watching it, so for me no, age is not an issue. And yes life is more than anime, just do both. :)

This. One medium is not inherently greater or worse than another, simply different. It took me years to realise that some of the most thought-provoking things I'd encountered came from films and not just books like everyone kept telling me when I was younger. That said, you should try to get out a bit. Ideally being social, sure, but quite often I'll go into London on my own for a film binge in Leicester Square (four cinema's right next to Chinatown. Seriously, is there a more heavenly place?) and just getting out of the house once in a while feels good. My social life, when I'm not with the wife, largely tends to consist of hanging out with a graphic designer, a hacker, a Starcraft II nerd and a woman who once asked "when was Jesus born." Yet somehow we all get along.

People around me always say "oh its animated, must be a cartoon for kids, grow up" but they're just hypocrits.
To me, apart from the fact it is animated, I see almost zero difference between the shit I watch and the shit they watch.

I'm 23 and neve gonna give up my decaptitating, space aliens, explosive, angst-filled dramas because someone who watches Jerry Springersays it is childish. Have you seen the shit you watch!! It's all about 'how to get into character a's pants'
At least I've got explosionz

Of course, if your anime is similar to say, telletubbies, then I'd be a bit worried

I've pondered that for awhile also. I've never really moved at all but I've always have been a outcast. I have more true friends on the internet than IRL anyway. I also think every one has an Anime/Manga/Hentei binge every once in a while ( I have one almost monthly). In this p.o.s. of a world we live in every one needs a release. Some people go to clubs,  others watch anime. I've talked to people almost 3 times my age (19y/o) about anime and had hour long conversations just on anime. hell anime helped me pass High school( teacher who held my life in her hands was an otaku from Japan). Its has been apart of my life for almost as long as I remember. In short every one has a hobby mine is anime and if you think that is childish then I have some hentei I could show you  .

He he, hentai is fine, but I usually respond with black lagoon.

I just use anime as a substitute for Western television, particularly back in my first few years of university where the cable package was abysmal and my internet was awesome. I'm sick of reality television, cop shows, and sitcoms -- I love the wide range of genre material and unconventional approaches available in anime. Western animation is not nearly so well supported financially or remotely as diverse, and live action is always struggling against budgets and the lack of artistic boldness endemic to mainstream television. There are exceptions of course, particularly on HBO and the like, but if I had to choose between my current satellite package and a highly restrictive ISP which blocked streaming or torrents from Japan, it wouldn't even be a contest.

I don't think pushing away things you enjoy to meet some preconceived notion of maturity, is mature. So long as you're not completely ignoring your responsibilities to idle in whatever you do for fun, you can unashamedly call yourself an adult whatever your hobby is.

Those who said Anime or stuff is childish, are childish themselves.

Unless of course, they understand that it is different yet similar to other stuff they like.
It is the understanding that makes people mature, not liking stuff that people make it out to be mature that makes them mature.

Watch as much as you like. Just don't watch too much. It never ends well when you do anything too much.

Don't you think it is weird that if you waste time on anime or games, the common thought is "too old for this, must get a life". However when the majority of the adults of past generation waste all their time in front of TV watching some shit mixed with ton of commercials, it totally "normal".
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

And sometimes the season is full of shows that suck. Or maybe you find yourself watching what feels like the same thing all over again. Or you see the characters of a new show to be the same characters from another show, or even several shows.

You are now of the kinds of people who vote on the stuff that comprise the awards shows you might see on TV. Academy Awards, Grammys, Tonys, etc. etc. etc. So congratulate yourself for becoming knowledgeable in at least something that other people enjoy.

I'm like Nikkoru in that I watch anime because I don't watch prime time TV that airs in America. American prime time television can only range so far. They were limited to live action, and so there were many genres they could not explore. Then too, as anime so often has the protagonists in junior high or high school, there are not enough great actors in America that are of that age, or could play that age. Just think of Naruto as a live action show from Hollywood. You could have started off with a kid, but by now he is either in rehab, needs rehab, or looks like Danny Bonaducci.

I'll admit that after reading through this thread, I'm happy to see that at 38 I'm not the oldest guys still watching anime! But still, saying you're too old to watch anime is like saying you're too old to ride a bicycle. I think society has some preconceptions about things like comic books, anime/manga, videogames, etc.... and while it's true that many people get into them when they're younger and grow out of them when they're older, this doesn't mean that people who stick with them or get into them when they're older are "sad losers". I don't live in my mom's basement and I've had sexual relations with other people, besides myself (not that you should be ashamed, if your life situation dictates the opposite).

Whether you fit the stereotype or not (whatever the stereotype is supposed to be these days), it doesn't really matter what people think as long as you're happy. When Gary Gygax died, all these people were saying "Did he die in his mom's basement while playing D&D by himself? lololololo1111ololo" Haters gonna hate....
