To go outside of the topic a bit... What about extreme anime fans, Otaku's, cosplayers etc etc? Is there an age limit were it's awkward to be one of those?
Older than 22
Above kindergarten
After the third cell division

After you get your red wings!!!
HAHAHAHHA  ;D

Because we can!

Yesterday, after work, I said this to my coworker for some stupid reason:

"Red bull gives you wings. Red Wings make your balls drop!!!"

She didn't know what Red Wings were... And when I described them, she almost puked... :/
When lolis must resort to suicide... you know you ain't in Kansas anymore!!!

You are in the exact same situation as I am except I am 22. I do believe there is an age cap for slice of life (around 25), but anything else is fair game as long as it is somewhat intellectual.

What? Slice of Life is usually more mature than other genre because they develop characters and relationships rather than gimmicky action and gag humour.

Beck, Genshikan, Emma, Honey and Clover, and Nodame Cantabile are all Slice Of Life -- there are plenty more like them.

I agree, Slice of Life is probably the most relevant anime genre. Nothing more enjoying being shown a story that can/likely has happened before in life. Even the fantasy based ones (Spice of Wolf) are still rooted in real relationships.

So don't limit yourself based on all of anime... just do as you please.

Well, in my perspective the Slice of Life-genre is perhaps the most powerful genre in anime (If it is played out well of course) It's the genre with the most maturity, due to factors Nikkoru and Shohei points out; Slife of Life mixed with some romance and drama; shaken not stirred - that is joy. But we all have different taste, thankfully. :)

36 years old here and still watching anime. Started when I was three!

Don't feel bad regarding anime, or animation in general, my friend. Remember: Animation are NOT cartoons. It's rather the other way around. Try watching Akira, or Ghost in the Shell, or anything from director Satoshi Kon and you'll get my meaning.

Bow, about feeling lonely: I'm also sort of a loner, but being alone gets kinda depressing to me. Some advice? Try getting in some sort of extra curricular activity that you like: A sport (I practice martial arts, myself), an art course, extracurricular school or college programs, heck, a cooking course, anything you like! You will almost invariably meet some people with similar tastes as you.

And remember: Nobody is perfect. NOBODY. So a little tolerance and, yes, a smile, will get you a long way. Variety is what keeps things interesting, and respect is what keeps us together as a society.

There is a guy who is watching anime even after he has died. I think you are still young enough so....

People seem to forget/not consider that anime is made by adults. Just look at Miyazaki Hayao or Takahata Isao. Nobody considers them too old, quite the opposite even.

and here I thought anime was a side project made by children between homework and lunch.

Dora the Explorer is made by adults as well, what's the point?

I never got the whole 'too old for' thing.

If you enjoy it, and it's not hurting/being forced on anymore else...what does it matter?

The point was people know Miyazaki enjoys his own works and yet nobody ridicules him over it. I was trying to say that views of people who make the media are not always the same as views about the people who watch it.

I don't know anything about Dora

^ This. I hardly get tired of the genre - almost any genre. One genre I don't like is yaoi (obviously) and stupid kids shit (non-mature, aimed for kids audience).

Surely the latter's not targeted at adults (we) anyhow.

Honestly i don't think it's a matter of age. Some people just get bored of Anime. I know i am totally bored of the cliched anime shows that pop up. I don't watch nearly as much as i used to. But when a really good show comes up i still seriously enjoy it just as much as i used to. I'm just a bit more discerning now that what i watch isn't just full of cliched crap. That isn't because ive got older i'm just much more experienced with anime now and the same old crap bores me to tears. Alot of people however make the mistake of thinking they are done with anime cos they're bored of the same old rubbish but have not really explored the multiple genres and standards within the medium. So my suggestion is try alot of different types of series and see if you can enjoy any of them. Branch out into stuff you wouldn't otherwise touch. If nothing interests you at all. Then maybe yes your done with Anime. But it's still got nothing to do with your age. Besides the time it took to watch enough Anime to get to this point.
Something witty.

To me, age doesn't matter, what's left is only enjoyment. Preferences of each individual is subjective, and if anime is what you enjoy, then it just is what you enjoy.

Ultimately, it isn't a problem with anime, as anything could've as easily taken up its position. You're having these thoughts probably because you're feeling down about your life. Well, everyday's a new start, so perk up, you ain't gonna be stuck being 24 forever, thinking whether you're too old for anime. Try something new, who knows you might find the passion for it.

If you have the time too, try reading up on the autobiography of the guy who founded Culture Japan. I think it relates much better to people who love anime and the Japanese culture, as opposed to biographies of some random successful businessman.
