Your Anime of the Year?
« on: December 17, 2013, 02:12:19 PM »
Let's try with just plain posting this time instead of a poll. It's just a lot easier this way.

Preferably some arguments as to why it's your AOTY.

Mine is Shingeki no Kyojin. There is absolutely no question. Sure, I've been entertained by a few other shows like Suisei no Gargantia, but it doesn't come close. I'm happy to know that there are still anime shows that can captivate me like Homeland or Game of Thrones. Not a lot of anime shows sets out to tell a good story. Snk is that show for me this year. Just incredible action, amazing characters. All-round an amazing show. I don't think I've been this amazed about a show since Brotherhood.

And this is coming from a person who already read manga. I can't imagine my experience if I hadn't.

It'd be cool if people could migrate any longer discussions to their respective anime threads.

I'm reserving judgment till start of April cause worthy contenders for me is Samurai Flamenco and Kill la Kill

for all that finished airing this year, SnK is no doubt the best

Chihayafuru! Kept me glued to the screen - some animes just have that "it" that absorbs you into the story, regardless of genre.

I guess my answer depends on whether or not we can pick something that started in '12 and ended in '13. If so, it's Shinsekai Yori. It was dark, deep and beautiful. Nothing has given me more emotional scars than Shinsekai. One of only a handful of series that I'd consider to be a masterpiece.

But if that is too old, I'll also go with Shingeki no Kyojin... for all the reasons Takeshi mentioned.

If you consider anime that ended in 2013 (no matter when they started), for me both Shinsekai yori and Space battleship yamato 2199 are competition for SnK. Add to that that SnK is not really finished yet (and had a few plot elements I didn't like at all), I'd be leaning towards Shinsekai for first place, yamato for second (because I love space) and SnK for third. Objectively speaking, SnK might deserve second over yamato, although I can only think of very few things that were wrong with yamato that'd justify that (which are also rooted in the 1974 base series)

Aku no Hana has been my anime of the year, it's such a marmite anime, you'll either love it or hate it.

This series was one to seriously play around with your emotions.

I seriously hope for a 2nd series, I know it's intended but as I said, it's marmite, a lot of people didn't like it for it's art style.

Shinsekai Yori if it where something with at least one ep in 2013.
If it has to start in 2013 then I would say Kami-sama no Inai Nichiyoubi with Yahari Ore no Seishun Lovecome wa Machigatte Iru as a close second.
Memories are meant to fade. They're designed that way for a reason.

I have many high-ranking shows this year, so picking one is hard, but since I must pick one, it'll be Watashi ga Motenai no wa Dou Kangaetemo Omaera ga Warui! or WataMote for short, simply because I know how it feels to have social anxiety, and how hard it is to properly communicate with people. Not to mention that Tomoko failing at everything she comes up with was quite hilarious, though somewhat saddening at the same time.

It has yet to finish. I'll be waiting for Kill la Kill and then I'll go from there. Attack on Titan is still #1 ... for now.

Uhh... just a little anime called Attack on Titan.

I didn't watch it when it aired... but I started watching it the week that it ended. Three days later and 26 episodes deep... I knew it was great.

As for story/originality... Aku No Hana. That had the biggest "shock" value for me. I still keep up with the manga right now (you guys have no idea where that show is gonna go for the second season). ;)

I haven't watched enough 'recent' anime to really be able to have an opinion on this topic, but I would like to know what the best recent anime is that is still available on BBT.

I'll probably get "Attack on Titan", but it's on THAT list, so I'll have to source it from elsewhere.

Don't bother telling me where to get it from, that's the easy part, getting a good encode is the tough part.  ::)

Valvrave, hands down biggest positive surprise of the year, easily beating Shingeki no Kyojin by a mile and a half!

The first half of the year was pretty awesome for me, but here's the list.
1. Attack on Titan
1. Monogatari season 2
1. Rozen maiden
Yup, those three are my top at the same spot. All three are completely different from each other and they made this year worthwhile for me. Yay.
2. Chiyafuru
3. Servant x service. (Want moar!!)

I can't say anything for
Shin sekai yori or kill la kill since I didn't have net not one for those sadly.

@Takeshi: attack on Titan is still awesome even after reading the manga? I imagine there must have been at least a little let down. Haven't been reading manga for same reason.

Watemote
just because so many people nowadays can relate.
and just felt plain sorry for her.
Samurai Flamenco
was really cheering the bloke on. . .an ordinary guy. ordinary world, and yet had such guts and determination.
(click to show/hide)
Blood Lad
what a cool vampire, lol. . .was a flashy anime for me but I found the humor quite refreshing.
"Yes, Natalya is a cute girl. However, I think she could use a special potion. Let me see here, 'Radiant Beauty'. . .NO. 'Ray of Sunshine'. . .NO. That's not it. . . Ah, here it is: 'Relax Frosty Bitch'. This should help her out."

It'll probably go to Log Horizon, as that's what I'm enjoying the most.

Honorable mentions, that I've enjoyed for one reason or another:

Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, great shounen.
Valvrate the Liberator, great what the fuck are you doing(in a good sense) series.
The World Only God Knows: Goddesses, the continuation of an interesting series.
My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU, an interesting take on a school SoL.

Another noteworthy one would be Mayou Maou Yuusha. It was good. However, I kind of didn't feel like actually watching it to the end and while the story and the world and all the other little things seemed quite good, it just didn't have enough of a "pull" for me to finish it.

These are the only shows of 2013 that I've enjoyed from start to finish, or to 11th episode in Log Horizons case. Every other show of the year had me go "What aaaaaaaarrrrrre you doing?"(In a bad sense)

I picked Shinsekai Yori for last year's AotY, so this year i'll go with To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S. The Accelerator vs clones arc through Misaka's eyes... brilliant.

Shit I'm Watching | Quite frankly, I don't give a fuck.
