VPN and seeding
« on: January 03, 2014, 03:39:06 PM »
Hi there,

I Have a question regarding seeding while using a VPN.
I currently have an account with "Private Internet Access" and use their VPN software on my windows home server build.
I had to do this as my isp throttles torrent traffic to a practically unusable level.

I want to give my fair share back to BakaBT as it has helped me obtain some anime that is almost impossible to get and I don't want to see anything dissappear.
Seeing as my server is up near 24/7 I thought it'd be good to seed everything I've downloaded but I've noticed that my stats don't seem to reflect what my client (utorrent) is reporting.
Each file is out by a rather large margin (ranging from hundreds of megs to gigs) and I was wondering if my vpn set up is likely the cause? (I use their exe as opposed to manually setting up socks etc)

I've noticed that torrents in question do have other trackers listed in the page so I also thought that perhaps I was feeding some other trackers?

I'm relatively new to torrents so not sure how the whole thing works.
I'm not really too worried if this can't be fixed as my stats are in good standing anyway, I'm mainly curious.

Thanks

Torrents DL from here don't have other trackers in them...

Ah well that's obviously not the issue then, I'm guessing that the other trackers I see in the tab on utorrent are something else entire then :p

Personally I think you'll get more mileage out of a seedbox in your situation - they come with a VPN anyways. https://whatbox.ca/plans/flexnl

If you find a single other tracker under the "Trackers" tab for any torrent, you either did not d/l it from BakaBT (quite possible, as public .torrent files can be posted anywhere, and are good for a month) OR you accidentally added one or more tracker(s) to it.  There is quite literally no other possibility.

This definitely would explain your "missing" data, by the by; some data simply doesn't go to BakaBT.

The best bet would be to remove the torrents in question from your queue and redownload them while making sure you are logged in on BakaBT.

Thanks for the help guys.

I rechecked my torrents last night and the other trackers listed were "DHT" and "localpeers" but it said that they were "unavailable" which leads me to think I totally misread the situation there.

Still leaves me wondering why my stats are so off?
I guess the next thing to do is rollback utorrent a little more and change my passkey then see if that makes any difference.

It's perfectly normal for BakaBT torrents.

I've done a bit more reading around VPN's and private tackers.
From what I can tell, BakaBT uses a passkey system which shouldn't be affected by a VPN.

So I've just rolled back uTorrent to 2.2.1 and readded my torrents, if that doesn't work then I'll look at changing my passkey.

Thanks
