Which matters more, the journey or the destination?
« on: January 25, 2014, 07:02:53 PM »
Recently I've been watching an anime that I've never seen, and accidentally spoiled the ending of it for myself. If you were me would you keep watching it? I know it's said that the journey is more important than the destination, but still.

Having the ending spoiled sucks, but that shouldn't take away the fun of watching it (unless the only redeeming feature of the anime was the ending). So, if you are enjoying the anime, continue watching it.

What is the anime, if I might ask?

Journey, definitely the journey.
Even if you spoiled the ending, you'd still want to know how.

The journey. Always. I've intentionally read about endings before, and it hasn't ruined the series in the slightest for me. If anything, it makes the series more enjoyable. Because then you're always thinking about how the series gets from point A to point B, knowing what point B is. It adds another level of intrigue that the series wouldn't have had.

Uh, you wrote that you've started to watch it.
If you like it, keep on watching. What does it matter what other people think?  ;)

Shit will get spoiled for me if I spoil it for myself or someone spoils it to me. I don't like that. It does affect if the series is damn good.

I've watched Fight club over 10 times and I can say I enjoy it more each time.

I've watched TTGL over 4 times and I can say I still get chills down my spine on the last episode

I've watched Evangelion over 10 times and I can say "fuck this pussy" every time shinji bitches about something. . .

While I agree with everyone else here, if it were me I would consider setting the show aside for a little while (a couple months?). You might forget whatever spoilers you heard, or at least become unclear on the details. Then, later, you can watch the show without knowing exactly what happens. Most importantly, you won't be ruining it for yourself by constantly asking "am I ruining this for myself since I know the ending?"

Ah, re-watching shows is different. I've seen TTGL I think 2 or 3 times and I want to watch it more. I've re-watched couple of other shows like Myself;Yourself about 4 times or so and I like the atmosphere and characters. KgNE is my favorite, though. I've seen that, literally, more than 30 times. Best hope crusher and Mitsuki's got it pretty hard. Hmm ... I don't know what else I've re-watched.

I want to watch Evangelion movies again just for ... what's that girl's name with the orange hair? I like her. I like the action and environment. The story is fucking stupid since a lot of shit gets left out. That's about it. Shinji is a pussy. I agree.

For the sake of avoiding any additional spoilers, I'll pass.

That's actually a really good idea.

The journey, just ask Takemoto (post-"bike ride" Takemoto, that is) from Honey & Clover.  ;D

A good example is Soul Eater. A lot of people complained about the ending and some thought it was even a waste of their time to watch the show because of that ending. Bollocks, to me the actual anime was fucking amazing. Sure, the ending wasn't an pair with the rest, but that hardly makes the rest bad.

I think carelessly spoiling an anime is one level above over hyping a show, it just shouldn't be done.

The journey always makes the anime. Only exception is 5cm per second.

Possibly relevant, but:

I recall hearing about the deaths of

in TTGL and Code Geass, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment of the series.

It somewhat lessens the enjoyment. But if I got stuck up about this, I wouldn't be able to watch the anime whose manga I have read.

The journey for most shows is more important.  Spoilers don't usually even bother me personally.  most shows ending suck anyway and the ones that don't also don't rely on the ending to be good.  If the show is good and the ending is good(spoiled) at least you don't need to worry about the ending sucking(sometimes i enjoy the show more).  But, if the show is good and the ending sucks at least you are prepared and wont be pissed at the crappy ending.  If the show sucks, now you know the ending and don't have to push to the ending.

While you can skip one boring scene/episode, if the ending is extremely bad you feel like you completely wasted your time.
Just check BioWare's forum after Mass Defect 3 for example. Sadly everything these days ends with stupid custom endings/ arcbreaks and "if you want to know the real story or what will happen next - read the manga/novel in the next 5-10years...)

The ending doesn't matter if you don't know the story, all chars and everything else, so if you know it from the start it doesn't change anything. May be even if you know the ending from the start you won't have high expectations for the last ep/chapter/mission or whatever you read/watch/play

If it's a ending that I like, the journey matters more.

If it's a bad ending then the destination.

The ending shapes my memory of the journey and yes we will all die.

Edit:Except in the case of romantic comedies. The journey sucks in those no matter the outcome.Watch the beginning and the end.Skip journey entirely.

Depending on the series, for some - the Journey is key, for others - not so much.
