He is using the word otaku in its modern, slang sense - which is exactly what everyone here thinks it means. If you give it a prefix it can also mean an obsessive/nerd/whatever - eg. densha otaku = train otaku = person who is obsessed with trains, such as that guy who decided to go and visit every railway station in japan, for fun. The only other meaning is its older, non-slangy meaning: House. And I don't think he believes the anime industry has too many houses.

Personally, I agree with him and the point he is trying to make entirely.

I wholeheartedly agree with Miyazaki.  Much of modern anime coming out now is practically porn.  We all know the industry is capable of much more than that.

Then there's otakus themselves.  Many of them act like closeted pedophiles and have the social skills of a rock.  I am not in the least bit surprised that people pick on them and single them out for ridicule.  Quite frankly, they deserve it.

Otakudom is a serious societal problem that Japan isn't acknowledging.  Japanese people should be paying a lot more attention to it, as otakus and these shows perpetuate a lot of bad stereotypes of their country to the world at large.

Then, you even get absolute gems like this guy:

Without Otakus, who would buy the 60 dollar blu-rays and merchandise for Otaku? Asking to recoup the money via 20 dollar blu rays and advertisements is just begging for bland generic mainstream animes for "normal people". Lets not forget that anime companies pay to stream their show on a t.v. channel, often in terrible times. I actually LOVE the business model of the anime. Big hits get lots of attention and small shows can pull through with just 3000 dedicated fans.

Honestly i agree. I think that Otaku culture is cool and there's some cool/funny stuff that is made in that vein recently. However the problem is that it's all there is getting made I am a huge Anime fan but lateley i watch maybe 1/2 shows a season the rest is too Otaku or for kids. Hate to say it but the stereotype about Anime being for kids and pervs is becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. I don't mind the fact that this stuff gets made but I want GOOD stuff too. Basically more attack on Titan less Mushibugyou (although that show wasn't terribad it was just more of the same nonsense).

What's that got to do with the essence of the statement? I'd rather listen to him/want to know his opinion than some no-name. He contributed immensely to the reputation of the Japanese animation throughout the world and was active until the end and not some faggot who crunches numbers and is out of touch with the business.

What do we have? Moeblobs and sexual fanservice bordering on erotica/pornography. Those are elements aimed at otaku, simple as that.

It's a vicious cycle... to generate money they aim at otaku, to get more money they cater even more... but Japan has other, much more difficult problems. The current tendency in the anime/manga industry is just a symptom of those.

Of course he has a point. But that's just pure lame looking at how he came out. He doesn't like things changing? Anime is becoming closer to porn? And? If you don't like it, go do something that you like doing. What matters is what the people want. He's the famed one? No he's not. WE are the famed ones. We have the money. You are entitled to whatever opinion and speech you want to make because that makes you, you. The people who watch and view and purchase goods. Not some lame ass old tard who wants to implement his stupidity on us. Rather, he's hurting "BECAUSE IT'S OTAKUS FAULT" blah blah blah and look at where he's pointing his fingers at.

Fanservice - is - awesome. I like it and I enjoy it.

^ There you go. The world screams for money. Creativity of all kinds, including the "porn anime" sells. Big advertisments, big boarders, big names, big "everything". Just like how America has the most nukes and calls the shots around the world - which is different in perspective, the anime world doesn't change for the matter that it is created within Japan and it shifts and moves things around.

Can you say that we're going to stick to the same old pattern a decade into the future? Take a look back at the early 2000 and fast forward to where we are now. Technology shaped everything. There are those producers who try to generate money through fanservice, and those with creativity, and those with two-in-one. It's just going to keep getting better and you're gonna have to adapt to it ... however you like, including dropping everything and moving on with your life. And who knows? Maybe we will see real porn anime uncensored in Japan a decade from now, or maybe we'll move towards something else - entirely dependent on what the people want, what the producers do, and how technology evolves.

Miyazaki should relax a bit and enjoy what he does doing. Let me know when "porn anime" stops because of Miyazaki. I'll be on the watch.
