School settings and slice of life seems to be an ongoing trend in anime nowadays. It will probably change overtime given the high popularity of titles like SnK, the Fate/series, Psycho Pass etc etc. However, you can find some equally great titles with a school based theme, which may not necessarily be a happy-go-lucky-shit-all-happens anime.

So, complaints for school anime are saying Kill la Kill is a bad show?
Kill la Kill is is different to most, thats more an example of something done right.

School series are made of:
- ecchi
- lolis
- tsunderes
- harem (at least 50% of the time)
- boring male leads
- girls being objectified
- moe
- incest (or more like, every incest anime = school anime)
- jokes (so that we can LOL all the times)

So yea, there is TOO MUCH of shitty school series.

How to make good "school series"?

- GTO
- CG
- Kill la kill
- etc.
- School Rumble
- Kimi to Boku
- Danshi Koukosei
- Seitokai Yakuindomo

added some series that was and forever godly, period~

To be honest, KlK or CG are not exactly your typical school anime so xD Added some :_D

Nodame Cantabile was not a school setting. It was set in a university, which I'd consider to be totally different.

And frankly, Ore no seishun rabu-kome (or Love Comedy - seriously, Love Come is a) wrong, and b) makes it sound really filthy) wa machigatteiru was about as generic as they come. It was very well made, sure, but I cannot think about anything remotely original about it.

Which is the point people here are making. Nobody's saying that school anime can't be good, what we're saying is that they're mostly so incredibly unoriginal. We want something a bit more interesting, just for a change. Ore no Seishun Love Comedy is a perfect example of the exact problem people are complaining about.

Sucks for you, but I love anime set in school.
If you don't like them, don't watch them.
I don't like sports anime, so I don't watch sports anime. See how simple that is?

Demons run when a good man goes to war. Night will fall and drown the sun, when a good man goes to war. Friendship dies and true love lies, night will fall and the dark will rise, when a good man goes to war. Demons run but count the cost, the battle's won, but the child is lost.

Look at the bright side. It's the repetitive unorginal anime series that make you appreciate originality in a story like for example an anime called Hozuki no Reitetsu and similar ones that have unique settings.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

I believe that the big problem isn't necessarily the school setting. It's the whole cliché of  the protagonist struggling in an environment of learning being pitted against a prodigy in the same class. Then against all odds the protagonist becomes extremely awesome due to a little bit of perseverance mingled with an often unexplainable hidden talent. Same old same old shit.

Overall, I can't say I mind the setting that much, but I do get tired of the cookie cutter shounen I described.

a fine example of real school anime;
School Days - who would be okay if dumped of cheated, especially if already done it? a godly-tier example...
School Rumble - the unrequited love, and Harima only attend school because of Tenma, nothing else matter...a reasonable example...

That's like saying not all of North Korea is crazy and then pointing at Kim Jong-il.

Um, hello?  HIgh school settings are pretty much de rigeur since the dawn of manga, anime, and Japanese shows in general.  "Project A-ko", "School Rumble", "Crows"/"Crows Zero", "Battle Royale" (not exactly school, but schoolkids), "Natsumi Yuujinchou", "To Aru Majutsu no Index"/"To Aru Kagaku no Railgun", etc., etc., etc., are all great examples of titles throughout the media's history that involve schools/schoolchildren in some way.

Complaining about any particular trope - or the media in general - by saying "{x}% is crap" is also quite disingenuous; that's ALWAYS been the case.  Go watch "Ba Oh: the Visitor" or "MD Geist", and then try to tell me how great anime was in the past; I can pretty much drown you with similar examples *spits*...

Yes, there certainly are bad series/movies/manga.  And?  Don't MAKE me slap ya down with some "Marine Boy", beeyotch!

ikr

Some people don't grow up liking sports though. To put into perspective, what if someone made an anime about League of Legends players in tournaments? Would you watch it (It would probably be a comedy  "R NOAWWWWWWW!")

What, no School Days joke yet? ;D
Even if you hated the show, it is undeniable that it is unique in anime, none the less school anime.

I don't care about where a particular anime is set. It doesn't impact the quality of the story or the depth of the characters. It can allow for exploration of certain themes unique to it, but that's about it.

Poor writing and one dimensional characters ruin anime. In the far reaches of space, the distant past, or among contemporary high school students in Japan it really doesn't matter.

I don't either tbh. However, I do believe anything can be awesome if done correctly...so I at least check things out regardless of genre dislikes.
One Outs been a great example.

Problem with school anime is it's usually the most churned out anime every season, and so many shows are almost identical. That doesn't mean school animes cannot be good though of course....like Bob says.
