Hayao Miyazaki "replacement"
« on: February 05, 2014, 06:38:24 PM »
I know it's late to bring up, but I want to know others opinion about who do you think will in a technical sense replace Hayao Miyazaki. Tho honestly no one could ever truly replace him. I've been a fan of his since I began watching anime at 4 and everything his directed I've really enjoyed. Which sucks because he retired last year. But I feel Mamoru Hosoda will be the new person that majority of people will be waiting to see the next film.

From Up on Poppy Hill was pretty good, hopefully Gorou will continue improving.

Yeah, it was good too.

According to Wikipedia, apparently he's worked with Ghibli since Princess Mononoke. Couldn't expect less from him, then. :)

Yeah, Gorou or Yonebayashi are the ones who will take over. Honestly, I don't think they'll ever quite reach the level of Miyazaki Hayao, but they certainly aren't bad.

With a lot of luck, Takahata may even pop out one more film, too. Kaguya-hime was superb, so I really hope so. But then again, he's even older than Miyazaki, so who knows.

Reminds me of how much I wish I could say "Satoshi Kon"...

Many great people worked right into their graves, so the chance may not be too slim.

Really agree that while Gorou and Yonebayashi are good, they haven't made anything that is as poignant as Miyazaki's films or can be assigned an instant classic status. Still it's better than having that brand of film die out completely.
